Competency
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competency:
- Prepare data using appropriate tools and techniques
- Draw conclusions from data to inform decision making
- Present data-driven narratives to both technical and non-technical audiences
Scenario
Part I: As a member of the accounting department for a medium-sized company, you have been selected to participate on a task force that will analyze software products through accounting processes. The company is considering one of two software providers, Microsoft Excel Power Query/Power BI and Tableau, so it is asking employees from various departments to test these software options. Each task force member has been tasked with doing an in-depth independent analysis of each software to determine which of the two options will be most beneficial for the company given the various accounting tasks that will need to be performed.
The task force has been provided with raw data sets, a set of processes (with instructions) to evaluate, and an Evaluation Checklist, which will help you create your report and presentation.
Using what you have learned from Milestone One, Milestone Two, and completed module lab assignments, you will provide a written report to outline problems, anomalies, techniques, and methods, and ultimately explain differences between Microsoft Excel Power Query/Power BI and Tableau. You will include a recommendation for the company to consider relating to which software option you believe would be most beneficial to the company.
Part II: You are now being asked to present your findings from the analysis to your department head (technical audience). She is looking for two things: an overview of your report to the task force and a summary of higher-level material that she can include in a brief to her leadership team. In lieu of an in-person presentation, you will record a presentation in Bongo. You will prepare PowerPoint slides that summarize your task force work, and you will verbally discuss those slides in your Bongo presentation. In your conclusion, you will include recommendations of highlights of your work within the presentation that your boss could present to the leadership team and add this information to the speaker notes section of the PowerPoint presentation. The leadership team is looking for a general overview of the results of your review and a couple of high-level recommendations (for a non-technical audience) based on your analysis.
Directions
In the modules you performed data analytics tasks using Microsoft Excel Power Query/Power BI and Tableau. Now you are ready to reflect on your experiences and formulate your recommendation.
Part I: Microsoft Excel Power Query/Power BI versus Tableau Comparison Report and Evaluation Checklist
- Identify specific problems that can be solved by data analytics tools.
- Explain techniques for different problem-solving tasks within data analytics tools.
- Include 2–3 examples of problem-solving tasks for Power BI and Tableau.
- Analyze ethical issues to be considered when working with data.
- Include 2–3 examples of ethical issues.
- Explain why clean data is used in an analysis.
- Justify why identifying anomalies is important when working with data.
- Include a visualization to showcase anomalies for each of the two technologies and how that helped you work with the data: Power BI and Tableau.
- Identify types of problems and anomalies discovered by the data analysis.
- Include 2–3 problems or anomalies for each of the technologies and how that helped you understand problems in the data set: Power BI and Tableau.
- Explain quantitative methods used for data analytics to help draw conclusions.
- Include 3–4 examples to support your explanation for each of the technologies: Power BI and Tableau.
- Apply methods used to resolve specific problems.
- Include 2–3 methods used for each of the technologies: Power BI and Tableau.
- Include problems solved by the methods for each of the technologies: Power BI and Tableau.
- Summarize how the recommended tool helped you draw conclusions about the data. Include the following in your summary:
- What did you learn about the data used for each of the technologies?
- How did you determine which technology tool would be more beneficial?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of each technology: Power BI and Tableau?
- Recommend a software tool based on the data analysis processes performed.
- Use examples of each of the technologies to support your recommendations.
Part II: Data Storytelling PowerPoint Presentation and Bongo Recording Now you are ready to tell the story of your data through a narrated screencast presentation using Bongo. Based on your Microsoft Excel Power Query/Power BI Versus Tableau Comparison Report, you will present your findings and recommendations to the department head and provide her with suggestions for delivering this information to the leadership team.
- Prepare an introduction based on your audience.
- Include the purpose of the presentation.
- Compose a narrative that provides a level of detail for a technical audience. Include the following in your response:
- Explain the steps/process used to compare Power BI and Tableau.
- Assemble your findings based on audience needs.
- Use 3–4 slides.
- Create data visualizations to explain advantages of the tool to a technical audience. Consider the following in your response:
- Include 2–3 visualizations for each tool.
- Create data visualizations to explain disadvantages of the tool for a technical audience. Consider the following in your response:
- Include 2–3 visualizations for each tool.
- Summarize findings on the use of Power BI and Tableau for a technical audience. Consider the following in your response:
- Communicate formal conclusions based on data.
- Communicate resolutions of tools with the greatest strengths.
- Create data visualizations and high-level recommendations to share with the leadership team (a non-technical audience). Consider the following in your response:
- Include high-level recommendations on which tool better suits the data analysis need.
- Include non-technical visualizations (2–3 high-level examples).
- Make sure that the visuals are simple and direct.
- Make clear connections with visually appealing content.
- Use speaker notes on each slide to document recommendations for a non-technical audience.
What to Submit
To complete this project, you must submit the following:
Part I: Microsoft Excel Power Query/Power BI Versus Tableau Comparison Report and Evaluation Checklist
- Create a report in Microsoft Word using double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. This assignment should be 3–5 pages in length, should include visuals, and should include references cited according to APA style. Consult the Shapiro Library APA Style Guide for more information on citations.
