REQUIREMENT

The group project accounts for 20% of the final module grade. Working in groups of four, your task is to:

  • Select a publicly traded Saudi company from a sector that holds inventories and receivables (e.g., manufacturing or retail sectors).
  • Obtain the instructor's approval for (a) the chosen company and (b) the group members by the end of week 6.
  • Using reliable, publicly available sources, write a 16-page report that represents an in-depth financial analysis of the selected company. You are required to collect the past five years (2019–2023) of the company’s annual financial statements—including the Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow Statement—along with Board of Directors’ reports for the same period. Additionally, you are required to gather and analyze the financial data of companies within the same industry to assess industry trends and performance. The report should address the following three key sections:
  • 1. Introduction The Introduction should begin with a brief overview of the report’s objectives and then be divided into two subsections: Industry overview and company overview. ·
  • Industry Overview Before analyzing the specific operations and strategies of an individual company, it is essential to understand the industry in which the firm operates. Industry analysis serves the following three primary aspects: a. A critical aspect of industry analysis involves evaluating the industry's sensitivity to external macroeconomic factors, both globally and domestically. These factors may include overall economic growth, geopolitical influences and regulatory environments. Understanding these external variables helps gauge the resilience and potential risks associated with the industry. b. A thorough industry assessment requires an understanding of key performance indicators that measure operational effectiveness. These indicators vary by industry and include internal industry-specific performance metrics that measure how well companies operate, such as production efficiency, demand-supply metrics, and utilization rates. For instance, in the oil production sector, critical metrics include oil prices, global demand for oil, crude oil and petroleum inventory levels, refinery capacity utilization rates, and equipment utilization rates. Similarly, in the semiconductor industry, vital statistics encompass the global sales report, the semiconductor equipment book-to-bill ratio, wafer fabrication plant utilization rates, the purchasing managers' index, and corporate capital expenditures. c. An industry analysis should examine the competitive landscape. Identifying characteristics that allow firms to generate sustained abnormal profits is crucial. This assessment should also consider factors such as market demand trends, the intensity of rivalry among existing firms, threats posed by new entrants, the availability of substitute products, and the bargaining power of both suppliers and customers. Understanding these elements helps in assessing the strategic positioning of firms within the industry. In short, the three primary aspects are as follows:
  • a. Looks at external economic influences
  • b. Focuses on internal industry-specific performance metrics
  • c. Assesses competition drivers within the industry. ·
  • Company Overview This section focuses on the selected company and its role within the industry. The first step in this analysis is to define the company's core operations—what the company does, the products or services it provides, and its target market. Another key aspect is determining the company's market share. Market share can be assessed by calculating the company’s total sales revenue as a percentage of the total revenue of the industry. This metric provides insight into the company's competitive standing and its influence in the market. Additionally, the company’s strategic positioning within the industry should be examined. Firms generally adopt one of three primary strategic approaches:
  • a. Cost Leadership – A cost leadership strategy focuses on maintaining low production costs and operating with thin profit margins. Success in this strategy is typically driven by high sales volume, as customers are attracted to competitive pricing.
  • b. Product Differentiation – This approach involves creating products with unique attributes that offer significant value to customers. Firms that adopt this strategy can command premium pricing, leading to high profit margins.
  • c. Focus Strategy – This strategy involves targeting a niche segment within the market by offering a highly specialized product or service. The focus can be on either cost advantages or product differentiation. A notable example is Apple’s strategy in the personal computer industry, where it successfully catered to a specific market segment with premium-quality products. An understanding of the company’s market positioning, competitive strategy, and industry standing provides a foundation for deeper financial analysis.
  • 2. Analysis and Discussion The analysis and discussion section should begin with the calculation of industry average financial ratios. These ratios serve as benchmarks for evaluating the company’s financial health and performance. The ratios should be categorized into groups, including liquidity ratios, solvency ratios, profitability ratios, and other key financial indicators. Once the industry averages have been established, the next step is to compute the financial ratios for the selected company. A comparative analysis should be conducted by evaluating the company’s financial metrics against the industry benchmarks. This comparison should be structured to provide meaningful insights into the company’s strengths and weaknesses relative to its peers. The financial analysis should incorporate both time-series analysis and cross-sectional analysis. Time-series analysis examines the company's financial performance over multiple periods, identifying trends, growth patterns, or financial stability concerns, among others. Cross-sectional analysis, on the other hand, compares the company’s financial performance against industry peers during the same period, highlighting relative advantages or disadvantages. A well-developed analysis and discussion report should integrate these financial insights into a coherent narrative. The assessment should provide a clear evaluation of the company’s financial stability, operational efficiency, profitability, and overall strategic standing in the industry, among other financial aspects. The discussion should also highlight potential risks and opportunities, offering strategic recommendations for future growth.
  • 3. Conclusion The conclusion should summarize the key findings from both the industry and company analysis. It should also highlight the major insights regarding the company’s financial health, strategic positioning, and overall performance based on the previous analysis and discussion section. This section should effectively consolidate the analysis to provide a well-rounded perspective on the company's current standing and future prospects.
