Etsy is a distinctive e-commerce platform known for offering handmade, vintage, and custom products, mostly sold by independent artisans and small businesses. The platform operates with a moderate to high level of complexity because it’s highly decentralized. Each seller handles their own inventory, pricing, shipping, customer service, and production timelines, which creates a lot of variation in how things are done. Etsy has to actively support and oversee this variety to keep the platform running smoothly and ensure a consistent experience for buyers. A big part of what makes Etsy complex is the number of custom and made-to-order items. Since many products are personalized or crafted on demand, Etsy needs to support direct communication between buyers and sellers, allow time for production, and make room for specific order details. On top of that, Etsy has to maintain a well-integrated platform with smart search tools, secure payment systems, and efficient ways to handle customer issues across thousands of different sellers (Aspers & Darr, 2022). Etsy also has a very high level of divergence. Most purchases are tailored to the buyer’s preferences, whether it's custom engravings or personalized designs, making nearly every order unique. This level of customization is a major contrast to the one-size-fits-all approach you find in more traditional retail. Overall, Etsy’s model relies on a balance of operational complexity and high personalization. It’s this combination that allows the platform to stand out in the competitive world of e-commerce by delivering a truly individual shopping experience.

Amazon is a prime example of an online sales company where the concepts of complexity and divergence are evident. Complexity in Amazon’s operations is reflected in its vast product offerings and intricate logistics network. With millions of items available for sale from books to electronics to household goods, the chance of customer inquiries increases. For instance, managing inventory, shipping, and customer reviews for such a wide array of products requires sophisticated information systems and data analytics. This complexity can pose challenges in ensuring consistent quality of service and maintaining customer satisfaction. On the other hand, divergence is seen in Amazon's ability to cater to diverse customer preferences and market segments. For example Amazon offers personalized recommendations based on browsing history, which creates a unique shopping experience for each user. Additionally, the company's Prime membership provides a variety of services like free shipping, streaming, and exclusive deals, appealing to different customer needs. Furthermore, Amazon has introduced multiple selling platforms, such as third party seller options, allowing various vendors to access its marketplace, thereby diverging from a direct sales model. This combination of complexity in operations and divergence in customer offerings enables Amazon to remain a leader in the online sales industry.

Article Three

As stated, OSCM has been around for many years, for about as many years as we have been an industrial civilization. However, today the interest is surging but probably not for the reasons you can obviously think of. The first factor why I think OSCM is becoming a topic of today's interest is the surge in cyber attacks and automated systems for both inventory management and production of materials. Every day, there are more risks to companies being victims of cyber attacks resulting in their systems, websites, payment processing software, or automated packing systems going down and potentially being down for a long enough time to hurt the company financially, or being held for ransom (Kumar et al. 2022). Now more than ever industries are moving towards "smart" systems to help them integrate and automate decision making, This uses systems such as the cloud, big data, and artificial intelligence, all of which are susceptible to cyber attacks. The resurgence of OSCM research is aiming to minimize these attacks or reduce the impact that these attacks have on operations and supply chains,

Next, I think that a huge step in companies becoming more green and eco friendly are impacting decisions regarding their OCSM processes. This can be anything from reducing packaging paste for raw materials and finished materials, reducing pollution when it comes to shipments and transportation or moving towards electric delivery vehicles. All of this while keeping up with the increased demand for faster delivery and accurate manufacturing. Basically, new OSCM methods are factoring in pollution and the use of finite resources and minimizing waste generation while not contributing to climate change and mitigating their effect on the environment (Vengeri et al., 2024).
