  1. a) Word Cloud:
    • Generate a word cloud for each document
    • Identify the most prominent words in each
    • Compare the prominent themes across documents
    b) Sentiment Analysis:
    • Use the sentiment analysis codes to assess the overall tone
    • Compare the positive, negative, and neutral sentiment scores

    • Compare the lengths and consider potential reasons for differences
    e) Keyword Occurrence:
    • Select several keywords relevant to the company's industry or current events
    • Count the occurrences of these keywords in each document
    • Compare the frequency of keyword usage
  2. Analysis and Interpretation:
    • For each analysis technique, explain the differences you observe

  4. Required deliverables: a report with three pairs of graphs/tables using at least three of the following analyses: a) Word Cloud Generation b) Sentiment Analysis c) Term Frequency Analysis d) Word Count e) Keyword Occurrence Count.

HERE IS A BETTER EXPLANANTIONOF HOW TO DO IT AND THE RESOURCES THAT WILL BE NEEDED :

Welcome to our exploration of managerial incentives and their impact on financial reporting. This module is designed to equip you with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for analyzing financial statements through the lens of managerial motivations.

Key Resources:

  1. Lecture Video: Managerial Incentives and Reporting Watch here: https://SDSU.zoom.us/rec/share/L9JSnxRMxpzHo4cIuqNwDT9ZW9OOiRrhLerLyhVEv-x5bEowKEM8OCG-Aol2HyP9.Q3UTFqZ24vay-pAU?startTime=1720211698000Links to an external site.. This video provides an overview of how managerial incentives can influence financial reporting practices.
  2. Sample Code Repository: Access here: https://colab.research.google.com/drive/1fHpv6rIv6ggy_l-5BNHgNuAgIuqIBKPl?usp=sharingLinks to an external site.. This repository contains sample Python code for various text analysis techniques we'll be using in our project.
  3. Code Demonstration Video: Watch here: https://SDSU.zoom.us/rec/share/A8odT6QTZQ0jB9X2HE6D93mEuHZmaAeocAM52Fs7mWwvo1bIzuqy8_OGjrkN2Q23.lrnwP4tmUhOzzTqY?startTime=1720203722000Links to an external site. This video walks you through practical examples of how to implement the textual analysis techniques using the Python from above. Note that the sample code might be updated (whenever there is a software package update) and be different from the one shown in the video. Always use the latest sample code.

Project Focus: All these materials are designed to support you in completing your individual project and preparing your presentation.

Next Steps:

  1. Watch the lecture video to understand the theoretical background
  2. Review the sample code repository to familiarize yourself with the analysis techniques
  3. Follow along with the code demonstration video to practice implementing these techniques
  4. Begin your individual project, applying these skills to real financial statements

Remember, the goal is not just to run the analyses, but to interpret your findings in the context of managerial incentives and their potential impact on financial reporting.

i WILL ALSO NEED A FORMATTED PRESENTATION ON WHAT TO SAY , WORD BY WORD AND FOLLOW THE STEPS AND OUTLINE OF WHAT I SHOULD SAY AND WHEN I SHOULD SAY IT :

Present your comparative textual analysis of financial statements effectively and concisely within a 12-minute time frame, together with your teammate if you would like.

Structure:

  1. Introduction (1 minute)
    • Briefly introduce yourself
    • State the companies/years you analyzed and why you chose them
  2. Methodology (2 minutes)
    • Explain how you collected and processed the data
    • Briefly describe each analysis technique you used
  3. Key Findings (6 minutes)
    • Present the most significant results from each analysis technique
    • Use visual aids (charts, word clouds, etc.) to illustrate your points
    • Highlight the main differences you found between the statements
    • Limit yourself to 1-2 slides per analysis technique
  4. Interpretation (2 minutes)
    • Explain possible reasons for the differences you observed
    • Discuss potential implications for investors or other stakeholders
  5. Conclusion (1 minute)
    • Summarize your main findings
    • Reflect on the strengths and limitations of your analysis
