When presenting information at work, understanding the role of data visualization in identifying overtime pay is essential for managing costs and improving financial decision making. For a fire department, overtime pay can significantly impact the budget, especially when unforeseen circumstances, such as emergencies or staffing shortages, lead to increased hours worked.
Data visualization allows for the effective analysis of patterns in overtime expenses by presenting complex data in a clear, accessible format. By visualizing key variables such as shift schedules, personnel availability, and overtime hours, accountants and financial analysts can quickly identify trends, anomalies, and areas where overtime costs may be unnecessarily high. This visual insight helps departments optimize staffing, reduce overtime spending, and make more informed budgetary decisions, ultimately improving financial efficiency while ensuring that the department can maintain appropriate service levels.
For this week’s assignment, complete question BE 9.11 on page 9-50 of your textbook using the following dataset and template:
Then, create a 3–5-page report addressing the following:
- Step 1: Critique and analyze the overtime graph. Does it accurately present the data and provide effective communication of the results? Use Chapter 9 in your textbook and the dataset above to analyze overtime pay for the fire department.
- Step 2: Create a new visualization using the dataset from the overtime 2025 worksheet. See the assignment template above for detailed instructions.
- Step 3: Write an analysis that addresses the following questions:
- What shortcuts did you find during the process of creating the PivotTables?
- What did you learn about communicating data results from completing this assignment? Think about the differences between the two charts and the way the data are organized.
- How should an organization use this visualization?
Make sure that your recommendations on the fire department’s 2025 overtime expenditures is supported with accurate and relevant data and graphs.
Please submit your assignment.
