Overview

In 2020 the U.S. retail industry experienced many high-profile bankruptcies. Large retailers like Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, and Sears filed for bankruptcy as well as many more in the industry. Many of these retailers had been struggling for a variety of reasons, with the increased popularity of online shopping and home delivery being two of the reasons most apparent to the public. The demand for online shopping and home delivery dramatically increased when the country experienced widespread lockdown orders in the wake of the global pandemic. Retailers that filed for bankruptcy in 2020 reported more than 100 million in assets. The bankruptcies had many far-reaching effects on the domestic economies, supply chains, and continued shifts in consumer practices.
