Accounting Question

Introduction

Create and design an Excel spreadsheet to resolve three different accounting problems. In addition to thinking through how to organize a problem solution in a different way via Excel, the objective is to begin to develop a basic working knowledge of Excel.

  • PowerPoint Slides are provided to accompany that video Introduction to Excel - Slides.
  • Park's computer labs have Excel installed if you don't own a personal copy &/or Excel can be obtained via Virtual Applications for Windows within MyPark. Here is the Virtual Apps User Manual.

Directions

  1. Because of the use of financial calculators, we will step away from the textbook for the issuance of bonds. The textbook material addressing the various types of bonds and accounting for bonds after issuance is still relevant.
  2. Complete the three bond amortization schedules by Sunday 11:59 pm CT as described in the Additional August Assignment in Mix Max.

See Assignments and Grading for assignment details and complete rubric.

Some of you have been excessively using the $ sign in your Excel assignments. Be sure to limit the use of the $ sign. In accounting, we report lots of numbers. When you format every cell to contain a $ sign, it makes it difficult for the reader to see your numbers. Amortization schedules usually don't have any $ signs in them as those are usually an internal document. However, in the formal financial statements, a $ sign must be shown so that the reader understands what currency is being reported. Usually the first and last number in each column is formatted with a $ sign in that case.
