Please note that there are two posts needed to successfully complete the discussion board assignment. An initial post addressing the discussion board topic is due by end of day Saturday. A response post to at least one other student is due by end of day Tuesday.
If you were to open your own business (a business that would require you to keep an inventory), what inventory costing method would you prefer? Discuss why you chose the particular inventory costing method and if your costing method would follow the actual flow of your inventory.
If no initial posts exist to allow for a response to be made, you may submit an additional initial post addressing another aspect of the unit topic.
RESPONSE TO CLASSMATE

If I were to open a business requiring inventory, such as the high-end bicycle boutique, I would choose the Perpetual Inventory System. The Perpetual Inventory System is essential because it gives me real-time control and information. Instead of waiting until the end of the month or quarter to physically count everything and calculate my costs (which is what the Periodic system does), the Perpetual system updates my inventory balances and the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) instantly every time I buy or sell an item. This means I always know exactly what I have, what it cost me, and what my profit is on every sale. This immediate knowledge is crucial for making smart, quick decisions about pricing, figuring out when to reorder, and catching issues like theft or breakage right away, significantly reducing the risk of running out of popular bikes.
It's important to know that the inventory system (Perpetual or Periodic) doesn't, by itself, decide the cost flow; it just decides when the records are updated. However, the Perpetual system works perfectly with the Specific Identification (SPEC ID) cost flow method that I prefer for high-value items. Since I'd be using SPEC ID, which tracks the exact cost of each individual bicycle, the Perpetual system records that precise, known cost every time a sale occurs. Therefore, the combination of the Perpetual system and the SPEC ID method ensures that the recorded cost flow perfectly matches the actual physical flow of the unique inventory leaving the store.
