Accounting Question

Overview

Part A

Part 1:

In the Template Spreadsheet Download Template Spreadsheetyou are provided with the FY2025 income statement for Alpha Company and some additional assumptions. You are required to prepare the FY 2026 forecasted income statement for the company using only the provided information.

Part 2:

Prepare a memo to the leadership team of Alpha Corporation addressing the following:

Describe the process used to develop the projected revenue and expense statement, emphasizing the role of key assumptions in shaping the forecast. Avoid detailing the specific calculations, as these will be demonstrated through your Excel formulas.

Evaluate at least two alternative approaches that could have been applied to create the forecast. Include the advantages and disadvantages of each, as well as any risks or inaccuracies that might arise from their use. Should just one set of assumptions be used for the forecast or should multiple assumptions be used (for instance, an increase in net sales by 2.5%, 3%, and 1%)? What would be the advantage or disadvantage of multiple assumptions?

Identify at least one qualitative forecasting technique that could enhance the forecast’s credibility for strategic decision-making, and explain how it could be integrated.

Your memo is required to be a five to seven pages in length. Your memo should be submitted as the body of your paper. In addition, you are required to include properly formatted title and references pages and conform to APA guidelines. Include at least three credible references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU Global Library is a good place to find these references.

Part B complete discussion

Forecasting plays a critical role in business planning, but the accuracy of a forecast depends heavily on the assumptions used. Discuss the importance of forecasting assumptions and how they influence projected financial outcomes. What are some examples of poor assumptions that can lead to inaccurate forecasts?

Imagine that Green Harvest is considering expanding into a new international market. Management estimates that the expansion will increase annual revenue by 15% over the next five years. However, the forecast assumes stable production costs and consistent consumer demand. If these assumptions prove incorrect, how might the company's financial projections be impacted? What steps should Green Harvest take to account for these uncertainties in their forecasts?

Be sure to post an initial, substantive response by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. MT, and respond to two or more classmates or the instructor with substantive responses by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT.

A substantive initial post answers the question presented completely and/or asks a thoughtful question pertaining to the topic. Be sure your post is unique. Do not repeat what other students have said.

Substantive peer responses ask a thoughtful question pertaining to the topic and/or answers a question (in detail) posted by another student or the instructor. Note: The following are not examples of substantive contributions:

  • Thanking, agreeing with, or complimenting a classmate.
  • Providing irrelevant commentary.

Week 6 Discussion

Hello Class,

Forecasting plays a vital role in business planning by helping organizations anticipate future financial performance and make informed strategic decisions. However, the reliability of any forecast largely depends on the assumptions on which it is based. These assumptions reflect expectations about future economic conditions, costs, consumer behavior, and operational capacity. When assumptions are realistic and carefully evaluated, forecasts can be highly valuable; when they are flawed, they can lead to inaccurate predictions and poor decision-making.

Forecasting assumptions directly influence projected revenues, expenses, cash flows, and profitability. For example, market growth assumptions affect revenue estimates, while cost assumptions shape expense projections. Ignoring factors such as volatile costs or uncertain demand can result in overstated profitability and underestimated risk. Brigham and Ehrhardt (2020) emphasize that unrealistic assumptions often produce overly optimistic projections, misleading stakeholders and distorting capital budgeting decisions.

Common examples of weak forecasting assumptions include expecting stable consumer demand in new markets, ignoring inflation, underestimating competition, or assuming constant production costs despite potential supply chain disruptions. Such assumptions fail to reflect real-world uncertainty and significantly reduce forecast accuracy.

In the case of Green Harvest’s proposed international expansion, management projects a 15% annual revenue growth over five years based on stable production costs and consistent consumer demand. If these assumptions prove incorrect, the financial implications could be severe. Rising labor, tariff, or transportation costs would reduce profit margins and cash flows, while lower-than-expected demand due to cultural differences, economic downturns, or increased competition would weaken revenues. These outcomes could strain working capital, reduce returns on investment, and threaten the viability of the expansion.

To address these risks, Green Harvest should adopt more robust forecasting practices. Scenario analysis can help evaluate best-case, worst-case, and most likely outcomes, while sensitivity analysis can identify assumptions with the greatest impact on financial results. Using conservative assumptions, developing contingency plans, and regularly updating forecasts as new information emerges will further improve accuracy and relevance.

You may be far too young to understand this reference, but British comedian Benny Hill had a famous bit where he portrayed a German professor circling sections of the word ASSUME in big white letters on a chalk board—“you must never assume because when you assume you make an A$$ out of U and ME” (YouTube, 2022).

Although it dates me, I use this a lot as it reminds me just how critical assumptions can be—truly effective when they’re sound and accurate and potentially disastrous when you get them wrong.

For Green Harvest, assumptions of revenue increases for expanding to a new international market are based on production costs and customer demand. I’m assuming they are using quantitative methods for the basis of this forecast including causal, when we produce to meet customer demand and control costs our revenues will increase, or time series which would base the projections on historical sales. They may even be using qualitative methods such as market research and customer surveys to measure demand to feed their forecasts.

However, should those assumptions be wrong due to lack of consistent trends, not taking into account market volatility, changes in the competitive landscape, or even planning for unforeseeable events, there could be significant losses, serious impacts to long-term financial stability, and a deterioration of customer and shareholder confidence in the company. One approach to mitigate risk is through focused scenario planning to improve the accuracy of the forecast and identify strategic options for decisions (Thomas, 2023).

Benny Hill’s warning serves as a reminder of the broad impacts of getting assumptions wrong, which happens far too often in our world.

What do you think of Green Harvest’s assumptions? Are they potentially getting it wrong?
