Compensation and Benefits: Discussion 2 (Chap 3)

Overview

  • You must have posted one original response (200–300 words) to the weekly discussion prompt. Points will be deducted if posts are under the word count.
  • What I am looking for:
    • Responses MUST reflect engagement with the lecture and/or readings.
    • Clarity of thinking rather than polished writing.
    • You are encouraged to express uncertainty, disagreement, or unresolved questions.
    • Finally, I want to emphasize that what I am NOT interested in is an AI-generated answer. I am not anti-AI, however, the point of this learning experience is not to be perfect and polished. I am trying to see how you connect with the material you read; what do you think of it and equally importantly how do you feel about it too? Data, research and historical knowledge are all good and important but as you might have learned by now (and as this course will show you), making important business decisions requires a great deal of contextual and situational understanding/awareness. A lot of this taps into having a human and intuitive read of many nuanced understandings of the situation (something that AI cannot organically generate for you). So I hope you use your perfectly capable human noggins to make these posts and not just popping in a lazy, AI-generated response (which you will be called out for because your professor is very familiar with the tone of ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Gemini etc. ;-) ).
    • Finally, please remember to be professional, polite, respectful, and courteous to your fellow classmates and follow the course civility expectations stated on the syllabus.
Below is an example of how your references should look like (you may use external sources but you must include at least one reference from the course material):Example:Question #1. What is a major obstacle to providing paid parental leave? One of the main concerns of organizations providing paid paternal leave is a loss of income. As there is no federal requirement, most medium to small-size organizations in the U.S. do not structure their business models to take paid leave into account (Sawhill & Nzau, 2019). Therefore, most organization predict financial and staffing consequences that they cannot afford as a result of predicting any form of paid leave. In addition to this, there are many other aspects that the organization needs to consider which make it difficult to design and implement paid parental leave, including coverage of income, length of time, gender neutrality, and re-training (pp.576 in textbook).Sawholl & Nzau (2019): https://www.brookings.edu/policy2020/votervital/wh...Links to an external site.
  • Instructor Question:Pick just 1 one of the following to respond to. Remember you still need at least 2 quality posts for full credit. Refer to more detailed instructions under Discussion 1.Option 1) Internal structures are part of the incentives offered in organizations. Look into any organization: your college, workplace, or the grocery store where you shop. Describe the flow of work. How is the job structure aligned with the organization’s business, the work flow, and its objectives? How do you believe it influences employee behaviors?Option 2)Discuss the factors that influence internal pay structures. Based on your own experience, which ones do you think are the most important? Why?
  • Example Answer:
    • In chapter 1 and 2, Organizational strategy is stated to be a requirement that should influence how compensation and benefits package is structured.External conditions such as inflation and labor market directly impacts how much an organization is willing to pay its employees, retain talent and train new talent. (Chapter 1 page 5 exhibit 1.1) shows a significant growth in the US economy from the early 90's to 2020. Government policies, laws and regulations such as the FLSA act of 1938 provides lawfully guidelines to wage fairness to employees in the united states. Stakeholders also influence compensation expectations, its been argued that the pay structure of executives can be tied to the profitability of the company which influences the stock price of a publicly traded company. "Stockholders have a particular interest in executive pay to the degree that the interests of executives are aligned with those of shareholders (Chapter 1, Page 9). Cultures and Societal norms also influence internal strategy, for example in some parts of Asia, compensation is structured based on the employees age and in Africa, you typically see older individuals been considered for a managerial position because of their age and not experience. Technology, Human Capital, employee acceptance and cost implication are all related factors. With every business been different, skills and education requirement required for the business to function will be different. for example, the skills needed to work as a customer representative is different from what is needed to work as a finance analyst which influences pay disparity and required technology tools needed to be successful at the job. All mentioned structures are all important to the success of an organization. The most important factor will be the Organizational strategy as it is a needed foundation and every organization is different and cannot be modeled the same way.
