The Dana Schutz Painting and The Till Photograph from Which She Painted It Critical Reflection

Instructions

You will do 3 critical reflections total for the quarter, plus 3 art projects. They should be 750 words minimum and include engagement with the readings, media, and lecture points. this is your first CR. It is due at the latest by the end of Week 5. You may begin working on it as soon as you have completed section in Week 2.

CR Prompt 1, Written: interpellation and ideology

Describe and compare how these works interpellate their viewers. "Interpellate" is the key concept to be unpacked. Choose from one of these options for your case in point:

(a) the Triton statue (Manuelita Brown, 2008) compared to Michael Asher's Untitled (1991), both outside the east side of the Price Center

(b) Topsy-Turvy (2014), a mural by artist Angela Jennings on the Thurgood Marshall campus's Solis Hall (https://marshall.ucsd.edu/programs/public-arts.html#Topsy-Turvy-

(c) the Dana Schutz painting and the Till photograph from which she painted it (discussed in Week 1, Chapter 1)

Note: You must responsibly and clearly use and work on at least one key concept from the reading and lectures in each CR, whether visual or art project. Identify these at the start of each CR. This week that concept is "interpellation" and you should also be discussing ideology.

CR Prompt 2, Art Project: the gaze

Trace, sketch, or build out of found materials a diagram, model, or map of a built or altered environment on campus or somewhere in San Diego to show how the gaze is directed by the design of space in ways that organize visuality in relationship to power. Even natural environments may be described as "built" (designed for viewing by access points, for example). Use some additional key concepts, such as the gaze, ideology, surveillance, visuality, and countervisuality, to make your point. Show dynamics of power through symbols (marks or objects), perhaps using a "key, " labels and notes, arrows, and/or person-avatars, models, or icons on your map or model.

CR Prompt 3, Written: Key concepts: realism and appropriation

Describe and analyze a work of art discussed in class or section in relationship to the concepts of realism and appropriation, explaining in what sense (drawing from realisms discussed in the reading and lectures) that the work is "realist," and explaining how appropriation functions in relationship to this realism. Use two or more of week 4 and 5's key terms, such as the copy, value, authorship, and authenticity. You may make reference also to the Benjamin "Work of Art" essay (required reading). You may be aided by refering back to the discussion of the Elgin Marbles in Week 2 to support the concept of appropriation, though there are many other examples to draw from as well to support your understanding of this concept.
