Essay Prompt: Death and the Afterlife in Art
Select one of the following artworks to analyze in relation to the theme of death and the afterlife:
The Great Pyramids at Giza (c. 2550-2490 BCE) The Catacomb of Priscilla (late 2nd century-4th century CE) The Dancing Shiva (c. 11th century CE)
Write an essay that discusses how your chosen artwork explores the theme of death and the afterlife. In your response, you should do the following:
Provide at least 3 accurate identifiers for the work of art you have selected.
Respond to the prompt with an art historically defensible claim or thesis that establishes a line of reasoning.
Support your claim with at least two examples of relevant visual and/or contextual evidence.
Explain how the evidence supports the claim.
Corroborate or qualify your claim by explaining relevant connections, providing nuance, or considering diverse views.
Your essay should not only analyze how the artwork represents death and the afterlife, but also consider how the work reflects the cultural, religious, and social beliefs of its time and place. Consider the iconography, materials, and techniques used in the artwork, as well as its historical context, to support your argument.
