UCSD San Diego Museum of Art Essay

Overview

  1. Find an example of a work of art that uses the element of color in a moving or provocative way. You can visit the San Diego Museum of Art online, or visit Google Arts and Culture Links to an external site.for an online tour of a major museum worldwide. Just make sure it's a fine art museum (not a natural history or science museum). Works of fine art can include painting, sculpture, drawing, print, photograph, weaving, mixed media, installation, etc, as long as they are related to what we will study in this course. Please make sure your chosen work is by a reputable artist and not a novice — if it's in a major museum, it's by a well-known artist. As an alternative, if you are an artist, you may instead upload an image of your own work, and then write a brief statement for your post as far as how you have used color in your work.
  2. Download an image of your selected work, then upload the image (EMBED the image) in your post. Give the name of the artist, the title of the artwork, and where you viewed it. Please no links or attachments. For help with how to embed an image in your post, please return to the Course Welcome module and find the links to posting a discussion in the Canvas guides or contact Canvas support.
  3. Write a response to your selected work of art, analyzing how the artist has employed color. Be sure to refer to the vocabulary for this week on color theory (see the Overview page for a list of terms - analogous, complementary, temperature, chroma, tint, etc). Here are some questions to consider when writing your post: How does the use of color strike you? What do you think was the artist's intended effect? Is there a specific mood that is conveyed? How does the use of color relate to the content of the work of art or its context?
