Overview
Discussion Prompt:
Yi-Fu Tuan introduces your reading this week by saying,"Experience is a cover-all term for the various modes through which a person knows and constructs reality. These modes range from the more direct and passive senses of smell, taste and touch to active visual perception and the indirect mode of symbolization." And on p.16 he writes "...the symbol will often give us the emotional effect of the perception.
" Part 1:
Pick 1 passage from the Tuan reading that resonated with you and describe why. Be specific - for example, you may have an experience that relates to the passage. Copy and paste the passage you chose before your response.
Part 2:
On page 17 in the last paragraph, Tuan writes "Place is a type of object. Places and objects define space, giving it a geometric personality." Aka, he argues that places + objects = space. Do you agree that places and objects define Space? Or would you define Space differently? How would you define space and how does it compare or contrast to Tuan's definition in this passage? (There is no right or wrong answer here -- the idea is to explore how you define space for yourself and in comparison to Tuan.)
