Overview

  1. Next, write 100-150 words analyzing and describing the artwork, using the following format:
    • Sentence 1: Begin your essay with your interpretation of the the artwork's mood/message and include the artist's name and the artwork's title, something along the lines of, "'Jane Deer's painting/drawing [insert Title here] evokes/makes me think of/suggests/provides a ..."
    • Sentence 2: Next, give a general overview of what the artwork depicts or looks like, something along the lines of, "Two figures.../A lone figure/A tangle lines..." Imagine you're describing the image in one sentence to someone with a migraine. They can't look themselves because the light hurts their eyes. Or maybe they're a vampire. You be you in terms of the metaphor.
    • Sentences 3, 4, 5+: Then, describe how the artwork's visual elements support its mood or message. You should think specifically about:
      • the artist's palette (their choice of colors) Remember that there are lots of shades of a given color. It can be bright, deep, pastel, etc.
      • how they treat figures and objects if it's a representational work (Are they presented realistically, as silhouettes, in a simplified or cartoonish manner, etc.?) or what kinds of shapes, lines, etc., they use if it's an abstract work.
      • how the different elements (figures, objects, buildings, shapes, colors, etc.) of the composition are arranged.
    • Final Sentence: How does this artwork relate to a work we've looked at in class? (Think about subject matter, material, style including line and brushwork, palette/color, representational or abstract, etc.) You can discuss a similarity or a difference. Can't remember what we've been looking at? Imagine me with a very sad facial expression, and then check the Smarthistory entries or the Class PowerPoints.
