Overview
Directions:
For this assignment, you will pick one of the following museums and explore its site. Read about the museum’s history and mission statement, and search the collection. Once you have obtained background information on the museum, pick one object (painting, sculpture, decorative art object) from the collection and write an art historical analysis.
Option 1: Los Angeles County Museum of Art
Option 2:Whitney Museum of Art, NY
Option 3: Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao
Format your paper as follows:
- At the top of the page, include an image of the object you will analyze. Ensure a proper object caption, including the Artist's Name, Tile (Date). [Just like the label on the museum’s site and as seen in your text]
- The first paragraph should provide contextual information about the museum. Who founded it? What type of collection does it focus on? Where is it located? What is their mission?
- The second paragraph should contain a formal and historical analysis of your chosen object.
- Include footnotes and a bibliography for any citations at the end.
Guidelines:
- The assignment must be at least 400 words (one double-spaced page).
- You must include an image of the object you are discussing.
- Your paper must be grammatically correct and checked for typos. Points will be deducted for all grammatical errors/typos.
- Any sources referenced must be scholarly and adhere to the course's guidelines.
- Any direct quotes or paraphrases must be appropriately cited in the Chicago Manual Style with a footnote and bibliography.
- Keep direct quotes and paraphrases to a minimum. Any more than one or two is excessive, and points will be deducted. I want to hear your voice and analysis of the object.
