A2
Research paper proposal
visual and cultural analysis of the knitting lesson by Junius Ralston Sloan
The Brauer Museum of Art houses The Knitting Lesson (1874) by Junius Ralston Sloan which I want to study through a research paper for my final project. The artwork impressed me at the museum because it created a peaceful mood through its carefully arranged elements which depicted ordinary life during the nineteenth century. The research will analyze the artistic elements of the painting as well as its social significance.
The research paper will examine the artistic elements of the work through a study of line, color, texture, space and composition. I will analyze how Sloan uses warm lighting and realistic details and soft facial expressions to show his themes about care and domestic life and femininity. I will study how the artist applied his methods to follow the main artistic movements of his period which emphasized both realism and genre painting.
I will analyze the artwork visually while comparing it to other pieces from the same time period and using class materials about elements of art and principles of design and American painting realism. I will learn proper artwork interpretation and analysis through the combination of Brauer Museum labels and class discussions and assigned readings.
I chose this subject because I personally connected with the painting during our visit. The artwork created a soothing environment which made me understand the figures' interaction as a depiction of educational relationships and family connections. The emotional bond I share with this artwork drives me to uncover its concealed meaning. I also hope to better understand how small details in an artwork can communicate emotion.
The project enables me to show my grasp of visual analysis through an analysis of an artwork which motivated me to use class concepts.
Q3 (This what I need you to do)
