In this module, we looked at how the profession of interior architecture and design formed. We studied the trajectory, looked at the formation of various societies, and we studied education, accreditation, and certification requirements. We looked at the hurdles and roadblocks from allied professions and other sources. We also studied the early decorators and designers that forged this emerging profession. So where does interior architecture and design belong? Is it an art that fits best in the fine arts or visual arts environment? Is it a science that is best suited in a field of human resources or business? Is it part of the construction industry? Is it a subset of architecture? Is it something else? Based on the position you take, consider how the formation of the profession affects your position. Areas may include:
- The values that AIID first placed on the profession: continuing education, outreach to the public, practice guidelines, and the code of ethics
- The health, safety, and welfare of the public: Life Safety, ADA, Universal Design, LEED, and so on
- How is this different if one practices outside of North America?
- The professional societies such as ASID, IIDA, and IDEC
- Professional licensure and certification: NCIDQ
- Accreditation of educational programs: CIDA
- The actual title of the profession
