*Week 4 Initial Discussion*

Class, for this week after reading, listening, and viewing all the material, discuss what you have learned about services for those who have disabilities. Use examples of what you have found in Maine that assist and support those who have disabilities, especially where you live.

Be sure to state, if applicable, which disabilities that are served. For instance, if there are systems in place for those who have spina bifida, how do they assist and support individuals who have the conditions. Please, do not all use the same disorder as other students have done so if you can. Some agencies assist many different disabilities while others just one or two.

Also, discuss why services you believe are needed - use examples. Be sure to support your answers with APA in-text citations and a proper reference list. Check out the example. Check out the website that is under Announcements as well if you need assistance with APA.

Be sure to write as if you are explaining to a friend what you have learned from the material rather than giving back the same information that the textbook and material has stated. The example illustrates how the material is analyzed and then answered.

When I say this, I don't mean for you to use slang or colloquialism, you need to keep the discourse academic. For instance, you are not to write something like "Dude I have a story . . ." or something like that. Keep in academic such as "I found out something interesting when I read the textbook for the course. I was very surprised . . ." Again check the example.

Also, do NOT comment on you your peer wrote their reply or suggest that they write it differently -- that isn't what the criteria is for the peer reply. You are only to comment on what you learned from them. If you haven't learned anything from any of your peers, then something is awry.

Class, for this week we are learning about services as well as support for those who have disabilities. Over the past several decades, services have become more available. One reason has to do with the ADA as it specifically concerns disabilities and how they have to be serviced such as through public access, education, and employment (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). However, services have also been supplied through not only federal mandates but also state and local ones as well. Some communities have special transportation for not just those with disabilities but also for the elderly so that they can get to doctors' appointments, shopping, and places they want or need to be at.

Support is essential for all of us but especially for those who need assistance with their conditions.. Some local communities have banks where a person can buy, rent, or even be given such things as canes, crutches, wheel chairs, electric beds, walkers, etc. (https://spurwinkalltech.org/alltech-services/recycle-reuse-program/) Also, technological apparatus such as TDD, computers, vision and auditory equipment are available through these types of equipment stores.

Support systems are important for those with disabilities and actually for all of us (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). Whether it is the church, social club, sewing circle, lifetime learning groups, support systems are needed. Some individuals do not have family or strong family ties; however, they might have good friends that help them. Or they might be part of a group specifically aimed at whatever their disability is. For instance, there are basketball teams that are just for those who are in wheelchairs or races that include those who might have prosthetic limbs and/or wheelchairs. All are important so that individuals have a quality of life and are accepted into the society they are part of (Wehmeyer et al., 2017).

For this week, after reading and listening to the material, go to discussions and reply to this week's question.
