*Week 7 Initial Discussion*

Class, for this week we are associating cognitive disorders with those who have disabilities and as such have a higher incidence of getting them.

For this week after viewing, listening, and reading all the material for the topic, discuss whether or not you have had experience with someone who has had dementia, Alzheimer's, or other cognitive impairing disorders. Add whether they have a disability as well. We are looking at the relationship between the two variables - existing disabilities and cognitive impairment at some point.

Discuss medication that they might have been on, if any, as well as other treatments such as exercise, nutrition, mental exercises (crosswords, puzzles, etc.). Do you feel as if any of it helped and if so say why and support your answer. If not - the same.

Be sure to state what you learned from this week's material and how you see those who you experience with cognitive impairment now versus before this week's work (if you haven't learned anything, say so and support it).

*Week 7 Mini-Lecture*

Class, for this week, we are learning about individuals who have disabilities along with disorders that include dementia and Alzheimer's diseases (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/alzheimers-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20350447). For instance, those who have Down's and other developmental genetic and/or chromosomal disorders might be more prone to the neurological problems than others (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). Whereas, some of these conditions are from birth, others such as Huntington's Disease (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/huntingtons-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20356117) and Parkinson's Disease (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/parkinsons-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20376055) develop later in life. One aspect that you need to keep in mind is that Alzheimer's is not a given diagnoses for aging - in other words aging and Alzheimer's are not inevitable (https://utswmed.org/medblog/dementia-alzheimers-facts/).

Etiology (causes) are complex when looking at cognitive decline; treatments are limited for some (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). There is ongoing research for the disorders that we are referring to within; however, right now there are no cures available (https://www.nia.nih.gov/research/ongoing-AD-trials). Professionals who deal with individuals who have these aforementioned co-morbid conditions need to know how to administer care along with compassion not just for the clients/patients, but also for their families and friends. Some of the treatments can vary according to the person as well as the agency that cares for the individual.

Your textbook goes into more detail about how best to assist those who have disabilities as well as neurological issues that go along with dementia and Alzheimer's diseases. However, this is a fluid field right now and treatments are evolving all the time as well as causes that contribute to the disorders.

Some areas that have been researched have been early childhood abuse, concussions, diseases such as COVID and such (https://www.parkinson.org/blog/science-news/concussions-dementia; https://www.alz.org/news/2021/covid-19-may-damage-the-brain-in-older-adults); however, no one cause has been established.

For this week, go to discussions after reading and viewing the material and discuss what you have learned.
