Planning a Professional Learning Community (PLC)

Overview

Assessment Description

A large component of enhancing educational outcomes is a curriculum leader’s ability to make data-informed decisions. By analyzing student achievement data, curriculum leaders can determine areas of curriculum and instruction strengths and weaknesses, enabling educators to implement targeted interventions and allocate resources more effectively. This evidence-based approach promotes accountability and transparency with all stakeholders.

Imagine you have accepted a position as a curriculum leader at a school that does not have a strong history of analyzing data and has never had a curriculum leader as a resource. The school administrator has tasked you with creating a plan for grade or content-level PLC meetings to help teachers take ownership in gathering, analyzing, and using data to inform instruction. Following a summative assessment, teachers may be accustomed to leadership presenting the data, but in the past, they have not been involved in the other parts of the data process. To assist the teachers in taking ownership of the data, you will be instructing them on how to complete the analysis and break the information down to create intervention groups for their classrooms.

Select a grade level K-12 (I prefer Kindergarten) and create a digital presentation of your choice (e.g., PowerPoint, Canva, Padlet, Trello) that you will share with that team of teachers. Your presentation should include the following:

  • Expectations of PLC meetings, including meeting norms and frequency of meetings.
  • A list of who will be included in the PLC and a description of their roles, responsibilities, and what they need to bring or prepare for the PLC.
  • Provide suggestions for how the PLC could share best practices, resources, technology, and effective instructional strategies.
  • An example of the protocol for data analysis that will be utilized (e.g., Atlas, 5-Whys, What? So What? Now What?, root cause analysis, data mining, data-driven dialogue).
  • Develop a sample data set and use it to demonstrate a best practices strategy for sorting data and how it could be used to create appropriate instruction and intervention.

Note: You may choose to add this assignment to the “Examples of Coursework” section of your Digital Profile from Topic 2.

Support your work with 2-3 scholarly resources.

The digital presentation should include graphics that are relevant to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately.

Since the presentation will be used to communicate with colleagues, keep the tone and language appropriate for the audience and communicate the information in a meaningful but empathetic way.

Submit a link to your presentation and scholarly resources as a single document. Ensure the link can be viewed by others prior to submitting.
