Week 3 gender

Overview

need help with Week 3 for my UCLA class (Gender Studies & History M180B). I am uploading the required readings and the syllabus — follow this exactly.

READINGS:

  1. Sharon Traweek, “How Modern Became Retro” (PDF attached)
  2. Book: Questing Excellence in Academia
Use ONLY ONE chapter from this link (not the whole book):
    https://www.taylorfrancis.com/reader/read-online/d55f1b96-99cc-4dbf-8304-2960fe5c9ae7/book/epub?context=ubx

I also attached the full book PDF here if it’s easier for you to use instead:

IMPORTANT:

  • Only use ONE chapter from the book (not multiple chapters)
  • The assignment is split into TWO separate responses

WHAT TO WRITE:
Write TWO responses:

  • 250 words on the Traweek article
  • 250 words on ONE chapter from the book

STRUCTURE (VERY IMPORTANT — FOLLOW EXACTLY):

For EACH reading, answer these analytic questions:

  1. What are the author’s:
  • main topic
  • research question
  • hypothesis (main argument)
  1. What research methods are used?
  • How do they use evidence or examples?
  • Why those methods?
  1. What analytic/interpretive approach is used?
  • How do they interpret their argument?
  • What framework or perspective?
  1. How is this part of a larger academic discussion?
  • What bigger issue is this connected to?
  1. What assumptions does the author make?
  2. Do you find the argument convincing? Why or why not?

AI REQUIREMENT (REQUIRED): At the end of EACH response, include:

AI Comparison:

  • Say I used 2 AI tools (ChatGPT + another AI like Gemini)
  • Explain briefly how their answers differed

IMPORTANT RULES:

  • Do NOT summarize — this must be analytical
  • Follow the question structure clearly
  • Keep it simple and clear (not overly formal)
  • No citations needed except (Author, year)
  • No quotes needed
  • Paragraph format only

STYLE:

  • About 250 words per response (~500 total)
  • Sound like a student, not AI
  • Be direct and clear

GOAL: Analyze how knowledge-making practices are changing, especially in universities and global systems.

Follow the syllabus exactly.
