This assignment helps you move from your research question to a well-supported thesis statement. You will use the BEAM Framework to analyze and integrate sources, guiding you to take a clear position on your topic.
Instructions: Write a 500-word essay moving your research question into a clear position.
Include the following:
- Introduction:
- Restate your research question, rewriting if needed based on instructor feedback.
- Write a one-sentence thesis statement that answers your research question for the audience of your choosing.
- Your thesis should present a clear claim that could be debated, supported by evidence, and countered by opposing views.
- Body Paragraphs:
- Select and categorize four sources that support your research (this can be formatted in a list). You need one source for each of the BEAM Framework categories. Discuss how each source fits into the BEAM Framework and supports your thesis – be sure to address opposing perspectives and how your thesis responds to them. Use the BEAM Reference Chart to ensure each source fits the appropriate category:
- 1 Background source: provides foundational knowledge
- 1 Exhibit source: offers examples or analyzed data
- 1 Argument source: presents a viewpoint you engage with (agree, counter, or build upon)
- 1 Method source: suggests tools or approaches for exploring your topic
