California Labor and Employment Laws

Overview

Many employers are located in other states but have employees who work in California. Legal requirements in California prevail over other state laws and, in some cases, supersede federal laws. Six different state regulatory agencies enforce California regulations. In comparison, other states are usually subject to only two or three.

Some of the most employee-friendly laws that have been created in the last few years are:

1. Pay Transparency Act. California was the FIRST state to adopt, and now only ten states have adopted, and

2. Salary History Ban. This law was enacted to help with the pay disparity between women and men. It's against the LAW for a potential employer to ask about current or past salary.

Please do Google research on these two California laws and write a 1-2 page summary discussing the following:

a) How will you use these laws to your advantage in future interviews?

b) Do you think these laws are necessary for today's employees? Why?

c) Have you ever interviewed and been caught off guard when asked about your salary requirements?
