Overview
Final Assignment: I/T or PreK Play Activity
Objective:
Create a detailed lesson plan for a play-based activity designed for an infant, toddler, or preschool classroom. The plan should address learning outcomes in two content areas (language, literacy, STEM, creative arts, social studies, social-emotional development, or physical health) and list the corresponding state outcomes, including the goal, learning standard, and benchmark (see Using the Preschool Language Arts Standards for an example of this), and explain how those are met. The plan should include activity steps, activity materials, teacher role, and child role using skills you have been practicing in your application assignments. Additionally, explain how this activity constitutes play and what type of play. Throughout attend to how the activity is developmentally appropriate for children – focusing on the age appropriate component of the activity.
Instructions and required assignment components:
1. Identify Age Group (2.5): Select one of the following age groups for your lesson plan and indicate clearly your targeted group:
- Infant (0-12 months)
- Toddler (1-3 years)
- Preschool (3-5 years)
2. Identify Content Areas (2.5): Choose two content areas from the following:
- Language and Literacy
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
- Social-Emotional Development
- Social Studies
- Physical Health
- Creative Arts
3. Describe the basic purpose or goal of the activity and corresponding learning standards (15 pts).
- Preschool: Identify the state learning outcomes for the selected age group and content areas. Include the goal, learning standard, and benchmark (preschool). Explain how your activity meets these outcomes.
- Infant/Toddler: Include the domain number and title (e.g., Domain 2: Fine Motor) along with the standard, and age (you can also include the specific goal for the selected age in months).
4. Describe the setting (e.g., discovery table, playground), the grouping configuration for the activity (e.g., small group, whole group), and materials (10 pts). Explain why the setting and grouping are appropriate for the activity and the setting. Explain how materials are developmentally appropriate for the children and the activity. Reference class readings (ex. textbook, articles)
5. Activity Steps (40 pts): Outline the steps of the activity in detail.
- List 5 instructional strategies that you will and how you will use them to support the development related to the learning outcomes. You can look at strategies listed in the text (or in these slides Download in these slides). These are specific things like using encouragement, use developmentally or culturally appropriate materials, encourage child independence, create opportunities to talk with peers, etc. These should be evidence based and derived from class readings and work.
- Teacher Role: Describe the role of the teacher during the activity.
- Child Role: Describe the role of the child during the activity.
6. Type of Play Activity (10 pts): Explain how the activity is play-based (what makes it play?) and identify the type of play (e.g., collaborative play, inquiry play based on the figure and from several class slides).

7. Describe how the activity is developmentally appropriate (10 pts). Using what you know about children’s development within the selected domain write about why this is age appropriate (hint: look at the learning outcome and the text to understand what we know about children’s development in this area and at your selected age). Additionally, provide information that you would also consider to ensure the activity was individually and culturally relevant to the child.
8. Create a professional looking document (10 pts). Although there is no proscribed assignment structure, you should include all elements of the assignment and should be written in a professional manner free of typos and grammatical errors.
Assignments will be graded according to the attached rubric. Final assignment rubric.docx
