🗫 Module 7 Discussion Question

Overview

This discussion will allow you to reflect on property crimes through the lens of the criminological theories we have been studying. For this week’s discussion we will look at the Critical Thinking scenarios for Chapters 12 and 14.

You are also responsible for responding to two fellow students: 1) one student who responded to your initial post, 2) one student who chose the same prompt as your initial post, and/or 3) one student who chose a different prompt than your initial post.

You must post before you can see your classmates posts.

Prepare for this discussion by reviewing:

  • Chapter 12 Economic Crimes: Blue-Collar, White-Collar, & Green Collar
  • Chapter 14 Crimes of the New Millennium: Cybercrime & Transnational Organized Crime

Select ONE of the prompts below for your initial response:

  1. Consider the Critical Thinking scenario on page 468 at the end of Chapter 12 in your text.
    • Devise an argument to sway the sentencing judge. Think about such issues as whether it is fair or even ethical to imprison nondangerous white-collar criminals to set an example. Should they merely suffer financial penalties? Are there any other alternatives? What is the purpose of putting someone like your client in prison for a nonviolent white-collar offense? Is he really a danger to society? Or would it be better to adopt the suggestion of Billy Ray Valentine (played by Eddie Murphy in the classic 1983 film Trading Places): “You know, it occurs to me that the best way you hurt rich people is by turning them into poor people”?
  2. Consider the Critical Thinking scenario on page 549 at the end of Chapter 14 in your text.
    • Develop an argument FOR or AGAINST implanting the tracking device in everyone. Remember you must support your position.

Your original response is due by Thursday of the module at 11:59 p.m.

  • Your original response should be at least 250 words.
  • Be sure to include the prompt you are addressing at the top of your post.
  • You must cite at least one source with in-text citations and a reference section in APA format. Your text is the preferred source.

    • Peer responses should be to two fellow students: 1) one student who responded to your initial post, 2) one student who chose the same prompt as your initial post, and/or 3) one student who chose a different prompt than your initial post.
    • Peer responses should be at least 150 words.
    • Responses must include reference to materials presented throughout this module of coursework. All references should be cited and listed in a reference section in APA format.
