Writing Question

Overview

  • Choose three items from the Images, Quotes, and Terms pages from Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, Unit 4, or Unit 5. The three items must be from three different units and be examples that can prove your thesis on one of the themes for this class. Watch the video in Unit 0, in which I explain each theme in detail.
  • Your thesis on the theme must show one commonality or trend relating to a theme from 1500 ish-1848. You must prove it with class materials, specifically items from the Images, Quotes, and Terms pages in Units 1-5. You can also use quotes from any parts of the primary source documents. It has to be from the exact excerpts I have chosen for the class materials.
  • Think of this as three significance assignments that share the same significance, which is your thesis. Make sure that your thesis is the same for each of your three examples. Some students essentially have three different theses, one for each example. I'm looking for something that unifies or connects the three examples beyond the theme. For instance, what common impact did government revolutions have in all three examples from Unit 1 to Unit 5?
  • This is set up as an essay quiz. Click on the blue "Take the Quiz" button below these directions when you are ready to start the assignment.
  • This quiz is not timed, but you only have one chance to take it. I advise composing it in Word or Google Docs and then pasting it into your answers.
  • Please enter your answers to the questions by typing complete sentences in the text box for prompts 2-5. Please do not attach or submit a file for any of these questions.
  • The first prompt asks for your chosen theme. You only need to type the theme for prompt 1. Here are the themes: The promises of American life, sectional differences and tensions between the North and South, or reform movements.
  • The second prompt asks for a valid and specific thesis on this theme in Units 1-5. Your thesis should be one to three sentences. Make it specific to the time period and avoid a general, universal approach or asking a question. Put in an argument that you will prove with your three examples.
  • The third prompt asks you to identify your first item with specific historical facts from class materials and show how it proves your thesis with analysis and specific historical facts from class materials. Put your item in historical context that contains specific historical facts from class materials. Please make your response to this prompt one to two paragraphs long.
  • The fourth prompt asks you to identify your second item with specific historical facts from class materials and show how it proves your thesis with analysis and specific historical facts from class materials. Put your item in historical context that contains specific historical facts from class materials. Please make your response to this prompt one to two paragraphs long. Make sure your second item is from a different unit than your first item in the third prompt.
  • The fifth prompt asks you to identify your second item with specific historical facts from class materials and show how it proves your thesis with analysis and specific historical facts from class materials. Put your item in historical context that contains specific historical facts from class materials. Please make your response to this prompt one to two paragraphs long. Make sure your third item is from a different unit than your first item in the third prompt and your second item in the fourth prompt.
  • Your answers to prompts #3-5 should adhere to the citation criteria described in the introduction to the Citations Quiz in Unit 0. You will earn a zero on this assignment if you have a missing, inaccurate, or inadequate citation. This is the most common reason for students failing this assignment
