Overview
I need help with Week 6 for my UCLA class (Gender Studies & History M180B). I will attach the readings and links — follow this exactly.
WEEK 6 TOPIC: How workplace cultures shaped the physical sciences and astronomy between 1940–2020, especially regarding gender, race, exclusion, collaboration, and power structures.
READINGS:
- Jarita Holbrook, Diane Gu, and Sharon Traweek:
“Reaching for the Stars Without an Invitation” - Diane Gu, Reynal Guillen, Jarita Holbrook, and Sharon Traweek:
“Partial Perspectives in Astronomy”
IMPORTANT:
- Use ALL two readings together
- Do NOT write separate responses for each reading
WHAT TO WRITE:
Write ONE response (~500 words total)
STRUCTURE (VERY IMPORTANT):
Answer these 5 questions using ALL THREE readings together:
- What shared topics, research questions, and hypotheses do the authors have?
- What are all 2 readings trying to study?
- What arguments are they making?
- What shared methods do the authors use?
- Interviews?
- Ethnography?
- Historical analysis?
- Observation?
- How do the authors similarly analyze or interpret their evidence?
- Intersectionality?
- Gender analysis?
- Critical race theory?
- Social/cultural analysis?
- How effective are the authors’ arguments and research methods?
- Do their methods support their arguments well?
- Would different methods or data improve the research?
- How does this body of work connect to the course?
- Workplace cultures
- Knowledge-making
- Power structures
- Intersectionality
- Exclusion/inclusion in science
IMPORTANT RULES:
- Do NOT summarize each article separately
- Analyze ALL THREE together
- Keep it simple and clear
- No citations needed except (Author, year)
- Paragraph format only
STYLE:
- About 500 words total
- Sound like a student, not AI
- Be direct and analytical
GOAL: Analyze how workplace cultures in science shape inclusion, exclusion, and knowledge production.
Follow the syllabus exactly.
