Overview
Curriculum leaders are often tasked with working across all subject areas and grade levels. As a curriculum leader, you will be responsible for ensuring that classroom teachers are planning and delivering instruction and assessments that are effectively aligned with standards and objectives. This alignment not only supports educators in designing purposeful instruction but also enhances the relevance and effectiveness of assessments. By focusing on standards and well-aligned objectives, curriculum leaders help ensure all students have access to high-quality education.
Imagine you have been asked to help the teacher teams at your school begin to plan a unit of study. This planning process is new to the school and your role is to help the teachers focus on the importance of alignment.
To create materials that will be most applicable to your current or future professional environment, select either a K-6 setting or a 7-12 setting as your focus for this assignment. Keeping in mind that as a curriculum leader you will likely be expected to support teachers outside of the current grade level or content area you teach, select two standards from two different content areas and/or grade levels and complete the “EDU-556 Aligning Standards and Objectives” template.
- Standards: Include the entire standard, with the standard code.
- Objectives: Write two measurable objectives to support each standard. Ensure you are using research-based principles when crafting the objectives.
- Instructional Strategies: Include an instructional strategy to support each objective that provides an authentic learning experience for students.
- Formative Assessments: A formative assessment strategy to assess mastery of each objective. The strategies must be supported with scholarly, peer-reviewed references.
Write a 250-500 word reflection addressing the following:
- Explain in detail how pre-assessment data can help teachers determine students' needs. Include how you would support teachers in using this data to identify needs specific to the objectives created in Part 1 and differentiate the instructional strategies.
- Discuss the difference between a formative assessment and a summative assessment. What responsibilities would a curriculum leader have in ensuring both types of assessment are effective and valid?
- Describe two strategies that will ensure the teachers continue to consider alignment with the objectives as the unit moves forward.
Support your work with 2-3 scholarly resources.
