Overview
Differentiation in education is essential because it addresses the diverse learning styles and capabilities of students. By tailoring instruction through the multiple means of representation, multiple means of engagement, and multiple means of expression, curriculum leaders can enhance student engagement, promote inclusivity, and support equitable learning outcomes.
As a curriculum leader, part of your role is to train or mentor new teachers. Providing a solid understanding of the multiple means of representation, multiple means of engagement, and multiple means of expression will assist teachers in creating differentiated learning opportunities to meet student needs.
To demonstrate the concept of multiple means, select a deliverable that is most appropriate for your future or current professional setting. This resource will be provided to new teachers as part of their training process.
- Infographic (e.g., Canva, Genially)
- Digital project collaboration tool (e.g., Trello, Padlet)

- Video presentation, including a written outline (e.g., YouTube, Loom, Powtoon)
Include the following in your training material:
- A description of multiple means of representation, multiple means of engagement, and multiple means of expression, including how and when each would be used in a classroom.
- Share examples of how a new teacher with English learners (ELs), gifted students, students with specific learning disabilities, and early finishers in their classroom should differentiate for each group of students for the three multiple means. Note: The grade level and/or content area of the students in mind should be specified.
- Explain the importance and value of planning with multiple means to optimize learning outcomes and support all learners.
