Overview
There are many benefits to co-teaching in an inclusive math classroom. Effective collaboration between the special education teacher and general education teacher allows for increased opportunities for differentiation, improves student achievement, and enhances social-emotional development. Special and general education teachers also expand their own knowledge and teaching capacity when applying co-teaching instruction and strategies in an inclusive setting.
As a special education teacher, you have specialized knowledge and skills in supporting students with exceptionalities and can collaborate with the general education teacher to create lessons that are both challenging and accessible for all students. In this assignment, you will develop a lesson plan to implement in an inclusive math class.
Part 1: Co-Teaching Lesson Plan
Using the “Co-Teaching Lesson Plan Template,” design a lesson for the grade of your choice. Include corresponding math standards from the state where you plan to teach (or national standards) and write a measurable objective for each standard. Select and describe two or more co-teaching approaches you will use in your lesson plan.
Part 2: Rationale
Support your lesson plan with a 250-500 word rationale that incorporates evidence-based or high-leverage practices in the inclusive setting. Your rationale should address the following:
- An explanation of how the co-teaching approaches in your lesson plan will support differentiation.
- Justification for how your chosen instructional strategies and activities, including technology, will promote mathematics skill development for students with exceptionalities.
- Discussion of the elements of effective collaboration between the general and special education teachers utilized in your lesson plan.
- How do you envision integrating a co-teaching lesson plan template in your future professional practice?
Support your findings with 2-3 scholarly resources.
