Truth or Lies
TV, the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and medical journals are among the many sources of medical information. Learning how to evaluate media sources can be an important skill to make the best decisions for your health care or the health care of your family. How do you know if a source is credible, and what can you do to counteract medical misinformation?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has changed the landscape on how we can find information. AI-powered tools are also assisting patients and health care by improving efficiency, accuracy, and access to information. How do you know if what you heard or read is actually true?
Overview
Many people are exposed to medical information on the Internet, in the news, and other media. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has changed the landscape on how we can find information. AI-powered tools are also assisting patients and health care by improving efficiency, accuracy, and access to information. How do you know if what you heard or read is actual?
Instructions
For this assessment you will critically analyze a health-related response generated by an AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT) and determine its accuracy, credibility, and potential risk through independent fact-checking using at least two credible sources. You will practice media literacy, health literacy, and source evaluation, with an emphasis on responsible use of AI in health contexts. A document of your research and reflection will be submitted as a final paper. Use the Assessment 7 Template [DOCX] to create your document. This assessment contains multiple steps.
Part One: Choose a Health Topic
Select a health question or condition relevant to you, a friend, or a general public concern. Some examples:
- What are early symptoms of Lyme disease?
- Does melatonin improve sleep quality?
- Are energy drinks harmful to heart health?
Part Two: Use an AI Tool
- Use ChatGPT or another AI-based tool to ask your exact health question. You must ask 3–4 follow up questions.
- Save and include the exact prompt you used and the AI-generated response in your paper.
Part Three: Analyze the AI Response
In your paper, include a critical analysis under the following sections:
- Clarity and Completeness
- Was the response understandable?
- Did it fully answer the question?
- Was anything important missing or oversimplified?
- Source Transparency
- Did the AI name any sources or studies?
- Were sources specific or vague (e.g., “experts say…”)?
- Could you verify any of the named sources?
- Risk or Harm Potential
- Could someone misuse or misunderstand this response?
- What could happen if someone followed this advice without consulting a medical professional?
- Are there ethical concerns with the AI’s response?
- Fact-Checking with Two Credible Articles
- Find a minimum of two credible health sources (e.g., Mayo Clinic, NIH, CDC, peer-reviewed articles, or government/public health websites).
- For each article:
- Provide the APA citation.
- Summarize the key information that confirms or contradicts the AI response.
- Discuss whether the AI tool provided accurate, partially accurate, or inaccurate information based on these articles.
- Overall Credibility Rating
- On a scale of 1 (untrustworthy) to 5 (very trustworthy), rate the AI’s health response.
- Explain why you gave that rating using evidence from your fact-checking.
Part 4: Write a Reflection
1. Write a reflection that addresses:
- How confident are you now in using AI to find health information?
- What will you do differently when seeking medical advice or information in the future?
- Should AI tools be used in health-related decision-making by the public? Why or why not?
Analysis and Reflection Paper Requirements
Use the Assessment 7 Template [DOCX] Your paper should meet the following requirements:
- Length: Your paper should include 4–5 pages in length.
