Facilitating a Professional Learning Community (PLC)

Overview

Assessment Description

Collaborative action planning enhances the effectiveness of educational programs and fosters a culture of shared responsibility and continuous improvement. Working collaboratively towards shared goals allows for the collection of diverse insights and expertise, which leads to meeting a broader range of student needs and learning styles. Professional Learning Communities (PLC) are a strategic approach to drive collective brainstorming, problem-solving, and action planning.

In Topic 2, you prepared a multiple means training resource for new teachers. Now you will include the entire grade-level or content area team by leading a PLC on the importance of using data to inform action planning. The PLC has noticed a downward trend in student assessment scores and your role is to help them understand how to use the data to make positive changes in instruction and assessment. You plan to meet with them over the next several weeks during their PLC time to continue the process of understanding, analyzing, and utilizing data to inform instruction.

Using a free digital tool of your choice (e.g., PowerPoint, Canva, Prezi), create a 10-12 slide digital presentation specifically designed to present to the grade-level/content area team during the initial PLC meeting.

Include the speaker’s notes below each content-related slide that elaborate on the bulleted content and represent what would be said when giving the presentation. Expand upon the information included on the slide, and do not simply restate it.

Include the following information for the PLC meeting:

  • Title Slide: Include the grade level/content area and goal for the ongoing PLC meetings.
  • Different Data and Assessments: Explain the differences between qualitative and quantitative data, progress monitoring data, and formative and summative assessment data with examples of how each can help identify learner needs and differentiate instruction.
  • Ethical Considerations: Discuss the ethical considerations that teachers must consider when analyzing and utilizing student data. Include at least one reference to the Professional Dispositions of Learners.
  • Data Analysis Strategies: Describe at least two research-based strategies the grade-level or content area team can implement to track and analyze each of the different examples of data and assessments (qualitative/quantitative data, progress monitoring data, and formative/summative assessment data).
  • Multiple Means: Demonstrate the connection between multiple means, academic achievement, and assessment scores. Include at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed citation to support this slide.
  • Action Plan: Share a grade-level or content area appropriate plan for the school year to support teachers and staff in their efforts to continuously gather data and adjust instructional strategies. Include how you will support this process as the curriculum leader on the campus.
  • Resource Slide: Include 2-3 scholarly resources for the PLC team to continue learning about data collection and analysis, with a rationale explaining how each resource supports the grade-level/content area team and furthers their understanding of data analysis.

Note: You may choose to add this assignment to the “Examples of Coursework” section of your Digital Portfolio from EDU-527.

Support your work with 2-3 scholarly resources.

The digital presentation should include graphics that are relevant to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately.

Since the presentation will be used to communicate with colleagues, keep the tone and language appropriate for the audience and communicate the information in a powerful but concise way.

Submit a link to your presentation and scholarly resources as a single document. Ensure the link can be viewed by others before submitting.
