Week 7 Preview:

  • This is the last week, Yippee! Monday, 5/25, was officially a holiday, and to have the requisite number of school days, this week ends the following Monday, June 1st. So you have an extra day to finish Unit 7.
  • I just finished wrapping up the last videos to make for my classes, and now all of my focus will be on catching up on grading. I hope to caught up by Sunday.
  • This week, we will be covering women in the Jazz Age, the Great Depression, the Age of Totalitarianism, and World War II. Hooo, boy, that is a lot to cover, but I mostly covered the women more than the details on the history.
  • I have assigned six primary sources for Unit 7. What was the significance of referring to the sun in Hiratsuka Raichō's poems? How did she define the New Woman. Why did Mary Garden decide to bob her hair? What does her reason suggest about conformity in an era of consumerism? According to Alexandra Kollontai, what reforms had the U.S.S.R. passed to liberate women? What concerns did those cause for women? How did she try to calm those concerns? What seemed to be the ultimate goal of Kollontai in passing these reforms? What law did Eleanor Roosevelt discuss in her My Day column? Why did she approve the repeal of the law? What role did Hitler want women to play in German society? Why did he want them to play that role? Based on the short story by Cao Ming, how did Granny Wu change after her encounter with Chairman Mao?
  • For the Reflections Assignment, remember to answer each of the questions in your chosen prompt and add a citation, some historical context, and specific historical facts to your the first question. Be sure that your citation adheres to the parameters and format in the introduction to the Citations Quiz in Unit 0. I want to remind you that if you have a missing, inadequate, or inaccurate citation, you will receive a 0 on the assignment. I've started catching up on my grading. Once I grade an assignment, you do not have a chance to fix your citation because I do not have time to grade the assignment again. If you fix the citation by adding a correct one in the comments of the assignment BEFORE I grade it, I will still give you credit. It's a good idea to go back to the Citations Quiz and look at the examples on how to cite class materials to make sure you have been citing them correctly. Do that soon so you can fix citations before I grade them.
7.5 Unit 7 Primary Source Documents

Introduction:

In 1911, Hiratsuka Raichō, along with some other women, started the literary magazine Bluestocking (Seito), which focused on works that challenged women’s roles as only wife and mother. Due to increasing pressure from conservative elements in society and censorship, the magazine closed in 1916. The first poem was from the first issue of Bluestocking.

Bluestocking:

In the beginning, woman was the sun. an authentic person. Today, she is the moon. Living through others. Reflecting the brilliance of others. . . . And now, Bluestocking, a journal created for the first time with the brains and hands of today’s Japanese women, raises its voice.

New Woman:

The new woman; I am a new woman. I seek, I strive each day to be that truly new woman I want to be. In truth, that eternally new being is the sun. I am the sun. I seek; I strive each day to be the sun I want to be. * * * * * The new woman curses yesterday. . . . The new woman is not satisfied with the life of the kind of woman who is made ignorant, made a slave, made a piece of meat by male selfishness. The new woman seeks to destroy the old morality and laws created for male advantage. . . . The new woman does not merely destroy the old morality and laws constructed out of male selfishness, but day by day attempts to create a new kingdom, where a new religion, a new morality, and new laws are carried out, based on the spiritual values and surpassing brilliance of the sun. Truly, the creation of this new kingdom is the mission of women. . . . The new woman is not simply covetous of power for its own sake. She seeks power to complete her mission, to be able to endure the exertion and agony of learning about and cultivating issues now unknown to her. . . . The new woman today seeks neither beauty nor virtue. She is simply crying out for strength, the strength to create this still unknown kingdom, the strength to fulfill her own hallowed mission.
