Gender studies Week 9

Overview

I need help with Week 9 for my UCLA class (Gender Studies & History M180B). Please follow the syllabus instructions exactly.

WEEK 9 TOPIC:

How have migrations of people and ideas changed STEM, 1940–2020?

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

  1. Read about Dr. Diane Gu:

https://www.dianeyugu.com

https://www.dianeyugu.com/selected-publications

Read Chapter 3 from:

Chinese Dreams? American Dreams?: The Lives of Chinese Women Scientists and Engineers in the United States (2016)

I will attach the chapter PDF if available.

  1. Read about Professor Helena Pettersson:

https://www.umu.se/en/staff/helena-pettersson/

Read ONE article on STEM mobility from her website, such as:

Returnees’ Cultural Jetlag: Highly Skilled Professionals’ Post-Mobility Experiences (2019)

  1. Read:

Gwilym Croucher and William Locke

“A Post-Coronavirus Pandemic World: Some Possible Trends and Their Implications for Australian Higher Education” (2020)

I will attach the PDF if available.

  1. Read:

“Covid Crisis Could See Learning Designers Supplant Academic Roles”

Times Higher Education (May 8, 2020)

https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/covid-crisis-could-see-learning-designers-supplant-academic-roles

IMPORTANT:

The assignment is NOT asking for separate reviews of each article.

The syllabus specifically says to answer the questions about the overall topic of STEM migration and mobility, using all of the readings together.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT:

Write ONE response of approximately 500 words.

Use the same analytic review format used throughout the course.

Address the following 4 questions:

  1. What are the main topics, research questions, and arguments concerning STEM migration and mobility?

Examples:

  • migration of scientists and engineers
  • international careers
  • movement of knowledge across countries
  • global STEM workforces
  • academic mobility
  1. What methods do the authors use?

Examples:

  • interviews
  • ethnography
  • life histories
  • case studies
  • workforce and higher education research
  1. What analytical approaches do the authors use?

Examples:

  • gender analysis
  • migration studies
  • workplace cultures
  • globalization
  • mobility and identity
  • knowledge production
  1. How convincing are the arguments?

Discuss whether the evidence and methods support the conclusions and whether other approaches might be more effective.

IMPORTANT CONNECTION:

Discuss how the migration issues raised by Diane Gu and Helena Pettersson may be affected by the major workforce and higher-education changes discussed in the Croucher & Locke report and the Times Higher Education article.

The paper should connect all of the materials together around the broader issue of STEM migration.

IMPORTANT:

  • Approximately 500 words total.
  • Do NOT write separate summaries of each reading.
  • Analyze all materials together.
  • Focus on STEM migration, mobility, careers, and movement of knowledge.
  • Sound like a student, not a research paper.
  • Follow the same style used in Weeks 1–8.
