Overview
Students and teachers need to have procedures based on the grade level and needs of the particular class. Teachers must intentionally think through classroom procedures and expectations to ensure they are equitable for students with diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts. Students have academic, social, emotional, and other needs that must be supported and considered when creating procedures, expectations, rewards, and interventions.
This assignment will help inform the fourth section of your classroom management plan, “Equitable Classroom Procedures” and the fifth section, “Expectation, Interventions, and Reward Systems.”
Part 1: Equitable Classroom Procedures
Utilize the “Equitable Procedures, Consequences, Expectations, and Rewards ” template to complete the topic assignment. Using the grade level you chose for the Topic 3 Classroom Management Plan Rough Draft, create four procedures for various learning environments. The four procedures should include:
- A procedure that supports digital citizenship and addresses students’ safe and responsible use of technology, both in physical and digital learning environments
- A procedure used in the digital classroom (e.g., logging into the digital classroom, discussions/uses of breakout rooms, use of icons/chat/features of video meeting platform)
- A procedure addressing safety during a drill (e.g., lock-down drill, fire drill)
- At least one additional procedure of your choice
For each procedure provide the following information:
- The name of the specific procedure and a brief explanation of the importance of the procedure.
- Student-friendly steps in the procedure that are appropriate for the selected grade level.
- Discuss factors teachers need to consider when fostering an equitable classroom, including meeting the needs of diverse students (e.g., poverty, special needs, cultural considerations).
- Identify natural and logical consequences to affirm students in following the procedure.
After creating the procedures, write a 100-150 word rationale explaining how procedures and logical consequences minimize distractions, maximize instructional time, and foster equity in both physical and digital learning environments.
Part 2: Expectations, Interventions, and Reward Systems
Create expectations, interventions, and a reward system that can be applied to both a physical and digital learning environment. Include the following:
- Identify five classroom behavior expectations/norms that create a safe and productive learning environment.
- Identify five behavior interventions that support your classroom expectations and strive to minimize and restore students’ challenging behaviors, allowing them to demonstrate positive behaviors. Interventions should start at the lowest level of intervention and end at the highest level of intervention.
- Description of the procedure that will be used to document challenging behaviors and the interventions applied.
- Explanation of the reward system that will be used in class, including how you will document the rewards and ensure equity in giving rewards.
After creating expectations, interventions, and rewards, write a 100-150 word rationale explaining how the expectations, interventions, and reward system will help build a positive, productive, and equitable learning environment that sets high expectations for all students.
