In an initial post, answer all of the following questions:
- List at least 5 ways in which African culture influenced current Mexican customs/traditions
- How are Mexicans with darker complexions are discriminated against in their own country, and how that is similar to racial tensions in other nations?
- Explain the significance of art for Peruvian race classifications and the colonial past of the country. What does it show us about the Afro-Peruvian experience?
- Compare the experience of Afro-Peruvians who largely do not finish high school, and continue to live in poverty. How does this prove a challenge in the lives of these people, and where else in the world do we see such discrimination and lack of resources (make sure to put specific countries and explain your thought process)
Then, answer one of the following questions underneath a classmate as a reply to their initial thread:
- How during the documentary did people show denial or acceptance of their African heritage, or African roots? What does that say about the experience of Black descended people in Mexico and/or Peru?
- What are some Black identity movements that were detailed in the film that stood out to you, from Afro-Peruvians? What is the importance of those movements for their current representation and their rich history?
- Did you know of the experience and presence of Black descended people in Mexico or Peru's history? If so, explain how that shapes your understanding of their history. If not, what does that say about the broader representation of the realities of the African diaspora?
