- Using our library database, research recent data (this year if possible) on the topic you are assigned (see: Hate Crimes/Violence Topics Assigned). If you need help finding an article, contact the librarian.
- Write two paragraphs--one that summarizes and one that critically analyzes the information that you found.*
- For the summary, consider: What are the numbers? What time frame do they consider? Any specific regions mentioned?
- For the critical analysis consider: why do you think this type of violence/hate crime exists? What is your reaction to it?
- At the bottom, provide a link to the article.

*To write a successful summary/critical analysis, you should first understand what the terms mean:
A summary is a clearly written and arranged paraphrasing of the original text. The summary/definition should not include your opinion, but rather just a restatement (in your own words) of the information. Your summary should be concise (saying the most you can say in few words), and be an accurate retelling of the information, highlighting the main points of what you read.
A critical analysis is your opinion about the results. To critically analyze the topic, remember to look at the item from all angles. What is your reaction to the information? Why? Explain your opinion/reaction.
