Overview
This week one of the themes is anti-Irish sentiment, especially when they first immigrate to America. Now, this does continue for quite some time, in fact Irish were not generally regarded as racially "White" until the 1970s. One of the documentaries you are watching in Canvas discusses some of their collective struggles in this country. For this discussion, please do the following:
- Locate an anti-Irish (American) political cartoon from the internet, and cite the publication name and date (year is fine). Embed the image so we can see it here (just as I do in these posts, for example).
- Explain how the image is meant to degrade the Irish in America, walk us through your explanation of the image and its careful nuance
- also:
- Explain how it perpetuates stereotyping of Irish Americans
- Explain which other racial/ethnic groups it is meant to liken them to
