Overview
Draw tree structures for sentences 6-23 .The sentences are also included here in files below
You will must draw the tree structures by hand, either on a tablet or paper that you scan and upload.
Make sure the trees are READABLE and RIGHT SIDE UP and uploaded PDF. Make sure both your ORIGINAL attempt and CORRECTIONS are visible. If the corrections are minimal, you may draw them directly on your original attempt. If more substantial, you will need to completely redraw the tree. The answer key can be found at the bottom of these directions.
This is our first practice at drawing tree structures. Tree structures are helpful tools because they allow us to have a relatively simple visual tool that help us to keep track of all the various things we have learned about, especially as we learn more and more and the amount of information contained in each sentence (in terms of parts of speech and relationship between pieces) increases. Although these sentences are simple, be very careful and detailed as you do them and correct them so that you can make sure you have this material down before we add more and more complicated structures.
NOTE: In the first video, they drew the tree structures with the words at the bottom and worked their way up. The answer keys are usually presented from the structure at the top, the S-node, and work down.
The former way of doing things is usually easier when you are just starting out. The latter way (top-down), however, actually provides more insight into tree structures--for example, certain words sometimes require that other words be "higher" in the sentence. (So, the word ever often requires a word like not to be higher in the sentence: John has not ever had any friends. Note that it is "height" which is important, not just precedence: That John has not had any friends has ever surprised me is strange; not precedes ever but it is not above it in the tree structure.) As a result, you can draw your tree structures from the bottom up, following what I did in the first video, but if you like the top-down version or are intrigued by this topic and might want to take 4361, the top-down version might be the way to go. tl;dr:
You can draw your trees like in the first video (in link below ) (bottom up starting with the words) or like in the answer keys (top down starting with the S). The first is probably easier but the second is ultimately more insightful.
Use the answer key to make VISIBLE corrections to your sentences and upload them here.
