RESEARCH PAPER – FOOD IN THE CITY FINAL PROJECT
Overview
I am completing a final project for a college course called Food in the City. The format of my final project is a research paper.
Course Requirements:
The professor requires students to:
- Choose one specific food business in New York City.
- Investigate one specific, narrow element within that business.
- Conduct thorough research.
- Use primary sources whenever possible.
- Connect findings to larger course themes.
- Develop a clear argument rather than simply summarizing information.
- Include proper citations and a separate Works Cited page.
- Demonstrate evidence of several weeks of thoughtful research and effort.
The professor specifically advised students to think “narrow, narrow, narrow” when selecting topics and noted that nearly half of the class is researching Katz’s Delicatessen. Because many students are covering the same business, this research must go beyond basic history and surface-level information. Please do not make the wording complicated at all, but genuine, strong, well-researched, and detailed.
Project Information
Business:
Katz’s Delicatessen (Lower East Side, Manhattan)
Approved Topic: How Katz’s Delicatessen preserves Jewish immigrant food traditions while adapting those traditions for modern New Yorkers and tourists.
Research Question: How does Katz’s Delicatessen preserve Jewish immigrant food traditions while adapting those traditions for modern New Yorkers and tourists?
Working Thesis: Katz’s Delicatessen has remained one of New York City’s most iconic restaurants because it transforms Jewish immigrant food traditions into an experience of authenticity and nostalgia.
