Humanization
Humanization is recognizing the humanity in ourselves and others. When we humanize others we allow for one to pursue their lives in the ways they want and in ways that don’t oppress others, and we create communities that uplift our lives, support our needs, and help one another to succeed especially in the face of adversity. When we humanize ourselves, we understand that our lives matter even as marginalized people, that we are worthy even if we don’t have the most money or have the highest status, and know that we are trying our best so it’s okay when “trying” is messy sometimes (that is human!) . Dehumanization (n)
Dehumanize (v)
Denying the humanity in orders including but not limited to associating non-humanlike qualities/attributes to a group or individuals. This is often done in order to justify mistreatment, subordination, inequality, or oppressionHumanization examples
Humanization in Ethnic StudiesThe creation of Ethnic Studies showed that people of color mattered tooHumanization at CuyamacaHumanizing the students?I know that life happens, so I have a grace period for discussion board assignments.Institutional Oppression
Institutional Oppression: Unfair and unjust policies or laws passed by the government, schools, the judicial systems, military, and law enforcement. These institutions are used to protect the privileges of elites, or people in power, by withholding privileges enjoyed by the elite and/or basic civil rights from people who don’t have access to institutional power and keeping less powerful people divided. These systems are enforced by mass media, police, schools, and family values (Daus-Magbual, 2009)Examples: Executive Order 9066 that ordered all Japanese Americans into internment camps during World War II. The Muslim ban (2017) that banned Muslim-dominant countries from immigrating to the United States. Slavery. Etc.EMPHASIS on ”policies or laws”Hegemony
"A form of leadership, dominance, and/or control exercised by a dominant class. This can be used to describe the dominance of one social group over another, including that of a nation state or government over its citizens and the way in which institutions control and dominate people's values, beliefs, and minds. Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937)” (Daus-Magbual, 2009, section: Hegemony)Coercion and consent– the idea that the dominant group coerces and the subordinate group “consents” to the coercion. Some find this idea problematic because, for example, European settlers coerced Native Americans into giving up their land but Native Americans did indeed resist.dominant ideologies (with ideologies being beliefs, especially of a group) become common sense for almost everyone
