2 remediations

-For the first remediation, I'll ask you to adapt that narrative to the web. For this assignment, you will create a multimodal artifact, or set of multimodal artifacts, that remediate your Literacy Narrative. You can use any tool you like for this project, though it should be one that is specific to the web. the number of tools that are out there are endless and you have complete autonomy in your choice. Consider using a tool that will help you in your career or hobby or passion: An artist might consider a visual digitization tool or design platform.

As part of the project, you may engage with any of the strategies from our readings or any of the expressions/strategies you have seen used in your collaborative expression maps. (Hint: You should use at least some of these strategies, but which ones are entirely up to you.) While what media you choose is open ended, I am asking you to be deliberate in your choice. As you compose, you should consider the following:

  • What is the message and style of your Literacy Narrative?
  • What are the affordances/constraints of the new medium/media you have chosen?
  • How do those affordances/constraints respond to the context of writing online, rather than in print?
  • What will you need to keep/gain/lose/change? Where can you remain faithful to the original?
  • What modes do you intend to engage to convey your message? How do they work together to deliver a unified message?
  • What perspectives and contexts are you working from or in?
  • Who is your intended audience, and how might they receive your work?
  • How will the medium/media you've chosen shape your composition process? How will they shape your intended message, or how do they work rhetorically?

What is important in this project is not so much length (after all, a video will be measured differently than a blog or a map) but how effectively you adapt your Literacy Narrative to a new medium.

As an addendum to your assignment, you will submit a 500-800 word rationale explaining your process and addressing the questions above. This is your opportunity to explain your decisions and thought process. Pay specific attention to the relationship between media and rhetoric in your work.

-For your previous remediation, I asked you to remediate your own writing. Now, you will remediate someone else's. Adaptation is a tried and true artistic form (The Lion King is an adaptation of Hamlet, Bill Nye the Science Guy or The Magic School Bus ways of adapting science lessons to a different audience or for a different purpose). You will complete this assignment in three parts. Make sure you complete all three parts.

Part 1:

Start by choosing one of the following essays:

Robin Kimmerer (biologist), "Asters and Goldenrods"

Ali M. El Yasin (nurse), "Theory Critique of Kristen Swanson’s Theory of Caring"

Adrienne Rich (feminist educator), "Claiming an Education"

Read the article carefully and create an expression map. I would suggest you start by writing in the margins, but then use a list or any creative method you would like to relay that map to me on a separate sheet of paper. You will turn in your Expression Map as Part 1 of the assignment.

Part 2:

For part 2 of this assignment, you will create a multimodal artifact (or set of multmodal artifacts) that remediates the essay you chose. Remember our discussions about affordances and about Frankenstein. Consider the affordances of the text; then, consider the affordances of your new medium. You might think back to Simpson as well. She remediates an academic text as a video.

As part of your project, you may engage with any of the strategies from our readings or any of the expressions/strategies you have seen used in your collaborative expression maps. (Hint: You should use at least some of these strategies, but which ones are entirely up to you.) While what media you choose is open ended, I am asking you to be deliberate in your choice. As you compose, you should consider many of the same questions you considered for your first remediation:

  • What is the message and style of the essay?

What is important in this project is not so much length (after all, a video will be measured differently than a blog or a map) but how effectively you adapt the original to a new medium.

Part 3:

As an addendum to your assignment, you will submit a 500-800 word rationale explaining your process and addressing the questions above. This is your opportunity to explain your decisions and thought process. Pay specific attention to the relationship between media and rhetoric in your work.
