Institutional racism/oppression definition

Institutional Oppression

  • Institutional Oppression: Unfair and unjust policies or laws passed by the government, schools, the judicial systems, military, and law enforcement. These institutions are used to protect the privileges of elites, or people in power, by withholding privileges enjoyed by the elite and/or basic civil rights from people who don’t have access to institutional power and keeping less powerful people divided. These systems are enforced by mass media, police, schools, and family values (Daus-Magbual, 2009)
  • Examples: Executive Order 9066 that ordered all Japanese Americans into internment camps during World War II. The Muslim ban (2017) that banned Muslim-dominant countries from immigrating to the United States. Slavery. Etc.
  • EMPHASIS on ”policies or laws”
