Overview

Assignment goal

  • Recognize "othering"
  • Discuss experiences of Asian Americans and Arab Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, Muslim Americans, and West Asians

Instructions

Use your understanding from the readings and do the following:

  1. Explain how the ‘other’ or ‘othering’ is established and the ramifications of this on different people and identity. How exactly are Asian Americans and Arab Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, and West Asians made into the societal "other", if they are both ‘ignored’ and ‘highlighted’ in U.S. society?
    1. Use the "othering" definition included in the "othering" page on Canvas for this week.
    2. Use at least 3 specific examples (direct quotations) from the Section 5.2 (Fischer and Hodges, 2023)(subheading/subtitle) and 3 specific examples from (AA, ME, MA, WA #1 (Kwaik, 2022, please include page numbers)(subheading/subtitle) and #2 (Elsheikh and Sisemore, 2021, please include page numbers)(subheading/subtitle).
    3. In order to receive credit, please cite (see above). For subheading, use the subheading that the example falls under.
    4. In order to receive credit you must explain why the example shows "othering."
"Othering"To "other":To treat as different and therefore, they don't belong."Othering” sometimes (not always) involves oppression especially through policies and laws that are made to subjugate people. To other is to treat someone else as if they don’t deserve what others have, especially if they are not from the U.S. or if they belong to a marginalized community. This is connected to the idea that someone who is seen as foreign or not from the dominant group (especially white, middle class, heterosexual, etc) is not as deserving.
