Inclusive Unit Design

Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to apply the principles of culturally responsive teaching, differentiated instruction, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to a real-world teaching scenario. You will design a two-week (ten-day) unit plan for a specific subject and grade level of your choice. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your ability to create a learning experience that is not only effective but also equitable, accessible, and engaging for all learners.

Your paper should be formatted in APA as if you were going to submit it for publication. If you are unclear on what that entails, I encourage you to review the Purdue OWL website.

Assignment Components

Your unit plan should be a single document, approximately 8-10 pages in length (excluding cover page and references), and include the following four sections:

1. Unit Overview

  • Subject & Grade Level: Clearly state the subject (e.g., 5th Grade Science, 10th Grade English) and the grade level you've chosen.
  • Unit Title & Central Question: Give your unit a title and formulate a central, overarching question that guides the content. This question should be thought-provoking and connect to the students' lived experiences.
  • Learning Objectives: List at least three clear, measurable learning objectives for the unit. These should align with the unit's central question and be a mix of cognitive, affective, and skills-based goals.
  • Description of the Student Population: Provide a brief, general description of the student population you are designing for. Consider their diversity in terms of culture, language, socioeconomic background, and learning needs.

2. Daily Lesson Plans & Activities

  • Lesson Plan Format: For each of the ten days, provide a brief lesson plan that includes:
    • Topic: The focus of the day's lesson.
    • Activity: A description of the main learning activity.
    • Assessment: A quick check for understanding (formative assessment).
  • Integration of Principles: Your lesson plans must visibly incorporate the principles of differentiated instruction (DI), culturally responsive teaching (CRT), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Be sure to demonstrate a variety of strategies across the ten days.

3. Diverse & Inclusive Resources

  • Resource List: Create a list of at least five resources that will be used throughout your unit. These should be a mix of text, video, and other multimedia.
  • Inclusivity & Accessibility: For each resource, explain how it is diverse (e.g., represents multiple perspectives, includes diverse authors or characters) and accessible (e.g., is free, available online, can be used with assistive technology). You must include at least two free or open-source resources.

4. Reflection & Justification

  • Reflection on Principles: Write a reflection that explains how your unit design embodies the principles of culturally responsive teaching, differentiated instruction, and Universal Design for Learning. This is where you will justify your choices.
  • Supporting Learners from Diverse Backgrounds: Specifically, explain how your choices in curriculum, activities, and assessments support learners from a variety of backgrounds, including those with different linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic needs.
