Overview
What Can You Do? Social justice requires more than just theory/discussion; it requires action. For this, create a specific goal and plan to achieve it. Here are the details:
Specific Plan (no research required): This semester we have learned about allies and advocates as well as six -isms (classism, sexism, heterosexism/homophobia, cisgenderism/transphobia, racism, and ableism). PPD Chapter 9 gives suggestions for next steps we can take. Based on the readings, videos, and activities from the semester, brainstorm one realistic goal you could create as an ally or an advocate to challenge one socially constructed privilege/assist a target group in striving for equality. Explain the goal and plan of action in detail. Note: Since this is personal, you are not to research this area. However, I want a realistic goal and specific steps with well thought-out details and explanation. Remember, it can be simple and achievable. Refer to PPD Chapter 9 and Epilogue for small steps we can all take. Your goal and plan should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART). This should be original—your OWN idea and explanation (the use of Artificial Intelligence is strictly prohibited). Contact me if you would like to discuss your idea(s) or would like clarification.
Your explanation should clearly focus and explain, with detail, the following:
- List and define the oppression that you would be willing to address. Select from the group of –isms we covered this semester: classism, sexism, heterosexism, cisgenderism, racism, ableism. (Note: You cannot put “all –isms.” You must select one).
- Explain why you selected this oppressed group.
- Based on your social identity marker and the definition of the term, explain your role: are you an ally or an advocate for this group?
- Your goal: What would you be willing to do? List a specific goal and details to achieve it. The goal should be simple, clear, and achievable. Review PPD Chapter 9 and Epilogue for more ideas/explanation on steps to being and ally or advocate.
- Your plan: List and describe the realistic steps that you could take to achieve the goal
- List and describe the possible specific obstacles that you might face
- List and describe the realistic steps could you take to overcome those obstacle
- Your post should be a minimum of 150 words. Be concise/avoid unnecessary words just to complete the minimum requirement. Type your word count at the end of your initial posts.
