Overview
This assignment is your opportunity to synthesize the knowledge you have gained throughout the semester and demonstrate your ability to be an advocate for equity in education. You will choose a specific diversity-related policy or issue at the local, state, or national level. You will then analyze its impact on diverse learners, conduct a brief interview with a practicing educator or advocate, and develop a comprehensive advocacy strategy to address the issue. The final product should be a polished, professional document or presentation that is ready to be shared with a relevant audience.
Your paper should be formatted in APA as if you were going to submit it for publication. If you are unclear on what that entails, I encourage you to review the Purdue OWL website.
Assignment Components
Your final product should include the following three sections. The format is your choice, but it must be professional and coherent (e.g., a formal report, a policy brief with a video presentation, or a detailed advocacy plan).
- Policy/Issue Analysis (40 points)
- Identify the Policy/Issue: Clearly state and describe the specific diversity-related policy or issue you have chosen. Provide a brief history and background, including the policy's purpose and its intended audience.
- Analyze the Impact: Based on your research and the theoretical frameworks from this course, analyze how this policy or issue impacts diverse learners. Be specific, and use evidence from the resources in this module and your previous work. Consider the impact on different groups of students (e.g., those with linguistic diversity, students with disabilities, etc.).
- Interview Summary: Summarize the key insights from your interview with an educator or advocate. Explain how their perspective either supports, challenges, or adds nuance to your analysis of the policy's impact.
- Advocacy Strategy & Justification (60 points)
- Advocacy Goal: Clearly state the specific goal of your advocacy strategy. What outcome are you trying to achieve? (e.g., "To amend the school's language access policy," or "To mobilize teachers to advocate for increased funding for special education.").
- Proposed Actions: Outline a
detailed, actionable plan for your advocacy strategy. What are the
specific steps you would take to achieve your goal? Consider using
multiple tactics, such as:
- Educating stakeholders (teachers, parents, community members).
- Meeting with policymakers.
- Using social media or public forums.
- Building a coalition of supporters.
- Justification: Explain why
your chosen strategy is likely to be effective. Justify your approach
with evidence from the resources on advocacy and policy, and explain how
it is tailored to your specific context.
- Final Product (20 points)
- Clarity and Professionalism: The final product should be well-organized, free of grammatical errors, and professionally presented.
- Synthesis of Information: Your final product must effectively synthesize all three components—the policy analysis, the interview insights, and the advocacy strategy—into a cohesive whole.
