Teamwork, Productivity, and Synergy

You manage a work team of 10 people in a call center. The team is very diverse, with people who reflect different qualities and attributes. Read each case below and recommend strategies for helping the members come to know each other, and then learn about how their unique qualities drive their work performance. The goal of a manager and a leader is to find ways to leverage each other’s strengths and to increase productivity and team synergy.

• Quentin is 24 years old and is relatively new to the organization and the team. Team members consider him to be an asset to both. He is talented, works hard, and shows great potential. Managers believe he will have great opportunities and do not want to lose him. He completes his work on time, at a high level of quality, contributing to team goals. However, he is somewhat of a free spirit. He often performs some of his work off-site and arrives at the office late and often leaves early. This behavior has caused complaints among other team members who see Quentin’s behavior as a lack of commitment to the company and a disregard for organizational policy.
• Lexis has worked in the company for 10 years. She prefers to complete projects on her own, even when the assignment calls for her to work with others. Her work exceeds team deadlines and is of high quality. She seldom participates in discussions in team meetings but does not claim credit for completing the assignment alone.
• Bradley is a veteran employee with 25 years on the job, makes no secret of his opinion that Quentin is a slacker and Lexis is not a “team player,” and both think that Bradley creates somewhat of a toxic environment. They often refuse to work on team projects that he is a part of or with each other.
