Writing Question

Welcome to Week 6! This week is all about writing and submitting your research essay draft. Since next week is already our final week of the semester, this draft is your only opportunity to get feedback from both myself and your peers before you submit the final version of your essay.

INSTRUCTIONS

Format

  • ion from you sources you wish to include in your essay. The next step will be to use those notecards to create an outline for your essay. I've included detailed instructions for how to do that below.

If you email a copy of your well-developed outline, I will give you 5 extra credit points. I must receive the email by Tuesday, July 14th at noon in order for you to be eligible of the extra credit.

Once your outline is established, it is time to transition to writing. To that end, I've included several resources that should help you draft your essay and use the required in-text parenthetical citations, which should be in MLA format. I've also assigned chapters from Who Says? that walk you through the process of beginning to write your research essay.

Finally, I've included links to several sample student essays. These are real research essays written by past Oakton students, and they provide you with well-written, authentic student research writing examples.

Most importantly, remember that your final essays must:

  • make a research-supported argument;
  • state the argument as a claim in your thesis statement;
  • integrate research from a minimum of 6 resources;
  • rely on paraphrasing, rather than direct quotation, to relay information from your sources;
  • utilize MLA formatted in-text citations as a way to indicate to readers whenever you are using ideas or words from a source;
  • evidence your voice and your analysis as the student writer;
  • include an MLA-formatted bibliography.
